New Steam Input UI is AWFUL
Exactly what it says.
Why the devs thought getting rid of the controller presentation in favor of a bunch of nested menus is beyond me. It completely abstracts the concept of changing a button layout into something that's hard to picture.
The old system of showing you a controller layout, and telling you WHAT those buttons do in context was much better. The actual interface left some things to be desired (being able to press a key/button during reassignment to quickly change it for one), but for the most part everything was where it should be (mostly) and made sense what you were doing. This new interface, jesus. It's a nightmare.
I really hope it gets a re-redesign. I'm all for the slick UI and the UI actually taking my resolution into account (after years of looking at a 1080p BigScreen on my 4k monitor), but the regression of Steam Input is a real blow to PC gaming. Steam Input to me was among the best things to happen to it, but this new UI is a real slap in the face to everything that they've accomplished.

yes

Me too, I can understand that they did this to better suit the Steam Deck, but I find baffling that this change was made even for normal PC users, it's terrible, I hope there is a way to return back to the original at least for PC.

Agree, is deeply flawed and there's nothing to fix about it. It has to be rewritten from scratch.
Or just let the old one somehow in place.

absolutely right the new one deck ui is so terrible

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2891899642

the old desktop ui tell which binding is what and they have picture layout to see

Completely agree and I wrote about it in the November 16th update thread here.

I actually thought it being accessible from game pages was an oversight, since the Steam Input Controller Configuration is tied to Big Picture Mode and you still see the new Controller Configuration UI without having the new BPM enabled. Apparently, this is intentional and Valve is now forcing this defective UI on their users. You can still access the old UI through BPM, however, but it's a nuisance to do so every time you want to change a config.

Steam should revert the Steam Input Controller Configuration UI to the old style so that it's consistent with Big Picture Mode. The new UI should only show if you have set the command line to use the new BPM (which is far from finished anyway, based on what I hear).

When they finally make the new BPM the default, I think they have two options:
  • Add a command line to let users use the old BPM, including the old Steam Input Controller Configuration UI when accessed from the game library (pressing "Controller Layout"). A separate launch command could be used for this or "-oldbigpicture" could also apply to the library.
  • Change the old Steam Input Controller Configuration UI graphically/cosmetically to match the new BPM and add an option somewhere to let users use that instead. The options could be called "Default" and "Alternate" or maybe "Classic".
If Valve continues with these questionable practices--forcing something on users they do not want--they will be in for quite some criticism and they certainly have earned it.

Indeed, at least one of these two options should be followed by Valve. I keep advocating for the first (keeping the old configurator, though maybe not the whole BPM), but the second is actually an excellent idea.
I understand that it means more work for Valve, but so is having to deal with constant complains from the users. The new configurator is wrong from the core, and having to constantly bend it into something usable is also a lot of work.

Agree, previous one is far better IMO

I feel the same way.

Absolutely agree. And there also was automatic calibration for sticks. And now it's only manual.

i also agree. i get that maybe it was because the screen was too small, so from that perspective nested menus make sense, but i think they could still make a lighter version and even "fancier" of the old one, at least for pc; users could choose then if they want to use the nested version for small screens, or an improved version of the original which was easier to look, and navigate.

I made a post about this in r/steaminput too, its so bad, i know they were trying to do the deck ui kinda thing, but this does NOT belong on pc.

Not a fan of the new keyboard UI either for desktop that you can bring up with the controller. The previous one was better.
NathanL1370 17 Apr, 2023 @ 7:35pm
The new UI's "Move Mouse to Position" command is even worse to work with; now you have to enter the X and Y positions as text.

If you set the X or Y positions too high, then the cursor will go off-screen. But if it's too low, the cursor would barely be away from the top left corner of the game window.

Even if you take a screenshot of your game with on-screen clickable buttons and mapping the X and Y coordinates from an image editor, it doesn't move the mouse to where you want the cursor to be.

Edit 5/13/2023: seems like the May 12th beta update re-implemented moving the cursor in-game, and it also allows using screenshots to position the mouse cursor. Huge improvement. However, you have to click "Start" on the move mouse to position screen.

I Asked chatGPT for help and it did. Here is how you force the old interface...

Open Steam and go to the "Steam" menu at the top left corner of the screen.
Select "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
Click on the "Controller" tab in the left-hand menu.
Under the "General Controller Settings" section, click on the "Desktop Configuration" button.
In the pop-up window, click on the "Use Previous Interface" button at the bottom.
