In-game FPS counter too big
The latest beta introduced a different font for the FPS counter making it way bigger than it was.
Styles and font have been updated on the in-game FPS counter when enabled.

Please give us the option to change font size or keep the old style.

Thank you.

We hear you all. We are still iterating on this, we’ll make it look a little closer to the original size/contrast for this beta.

You will see more of our broader work in this area show up at some point soon (maybe later this beta cycle, maybe in another cycle soon), and I think you’ll understand that we actually touched this because we are investing in a set of tools that will be helpful. We’re super aware that there is a sensitivity around how unobtrusive and non-game immersion breaking this is vs trying to make it more readable. As we work in this area you are going to see more options to customize detail levels and sizes, but that won’t show up immediately.

Thanks for the feedback on the current change, it does really help us to help think about the right balance of unobtrusive vs readability and detail as we go forward.

Yup, I instantly noticed it too as soon as I launched a game; with the previous one I didn't even notice that it was enabled if I didn't intentionally looked at it. It's more in line with the fps counter of the deck/big picture, but more bothersome too. I also want the old one back.

The old one was subtle, barely noticeable and didn't draw attention when you weren't looking at it, but the new one feels too big (27" 1440p monitor) and it's also shown on this new black box with transparency which makes it even more noticeable without really making it easier to read.

Just started a game and immediately thought something bugged out. That thing is way too big now and massively distracting.
The previous, smaller size was perfect for me; I always have it on so I can setup new games, make sure my fps limiter is still working, see if gameplay issues might be related to framerate, etc. It was small enough, that I never notice it unless I look at it purposely.

Valve, at least give us an option for size?

i agree. kinda defeats the idea of having a high contrast option when the default is as distracting

Yes, the new design is very distracting.
Please give us the option of using the previous size / font without the transparent background.
the numbers look wider and more bold, for w/e font it is using...

a single digit showing there seems quite big (from what i can tell in a double), but as digits get added (double, triple.... more), it simply gets bigger and bigger, it doesnt seem to (what it should be doing), is getting smaller as the number gets bigger, not the opposite.

i imagine, that first digit changing, may cover more as it changes (as the number change their shape) and even worse, past 3 digits.

also, if you notice as a game starts up, said number starts out as a single digit, but with "...." (line of dots) at the end, right before the number jumps to what its supposed to be at (i assume thats simply indication/placeholder, the overlay shows before said numbers start functioning).

https://imgur.com/a/ti6ik8l (trying to get a screenshot of single (with dots at end), which isnt easy, which the screenshot shows... and looks bugged with frozen screen due to "snipping tool")

btw, notice the size of the bugged single digit (above). i caught with "snipping tool", its way smaller/thinner.

https://imgur.com/a/CbVHhCS (double/triple digits)

images linked above, 4k screen with native 144hz (desktop set at 1080p), game was set at 1080p (brotato for a quick fps test), but i could only grab double/triple digits, not sure if im simply drawing a blank atm (used to be able to do this stuff when i needed, but since win 11 i cant anymore...), but none of my gpu software, including win 11 pro graphics settings, will allow me to set fps to a single digit, or allow fps past the tv's hz, thats with vsync off in-game, nivida vsync set to "game control" in global, thus no vsync, so nothing is holding it back, so i couldnt grab a single digit, or higher than 3 for a extra reference points.

can anyone else do this in their gpu software? i havent tried messing with fps settings in awhile, as i usually have them set how i want and never mess with them again.

i also agree, its quite big and distracting, always had issue finding a decent "corner" to hide it in.... but now its so big, doesnt matter where it goes, its forever distracting, noticeable and being even more intrusive by cover in-game UI stuff.

they need to either allow us to be able to change it back/change font/size, or they change it to something else, or fix w/e happened (if its a bug), willing to bet it will get a lot more attention than it has, when people start seeing the change.

edit: currently 6 (4 in beta feedback, 2 in bug reports) threads on the topic, since the update.

edit: to add, i also have the steam setting "scale steam overlay text and icons to match monitor settings" set to enabled, so it should be scaling at screens settings, but it isnt, it simply gets bigger with more digits.

have a nice day peep

i liked the old fps counter wayyy better, was more minimalistic, would be nice if we had the choice to switch between the 2 at least.
Yes, this new counter, although much more readable on higher resolutions, is really distracting. Considering that looking constantly on an FPS counter ruins the experience, this new font and size makes my eyes jump on it much more then before. A toggle option would be perfect.

I absolutely hate the changes Nvidia made to it's own FPS counter and this is more or less on the same level for me

It is definitely too obvious now. I always kept the FPS counter on so I could glance up when I needed to, as it was always so subtle I had to actually look at it. The redesign is just... too big, and the background makes it overly eye-catching. It just sticks out too much. I don't think it's a bad redesign, but there definitely needs to be a toggle in the overlay settings so that people can choose between which counter UI they prefer.
agreed, the old one looked better
That was a sole reason I always left it enebled, it didn't bother me, yet I could always glance into the corner to see FPS reading. Now I just either could not notice huge font or am forced to toggle it off/on manually. This sucks.

Agreed, was wondering what happened, if it was a Windows update. I absolutely HATE this new counter, PLEASE do not force such things on us, ALWAYS give options. I personally want the old smaller font size (less intrusive) and to have the option to NOT have a background.

İnferno haritasında T'ye geçtiğimde fps problemi yaşıyorum.
The old one looked better and it wasn't catching my attention all the time, only glanced at it when I needed to. I see the point of it being usable for people with bad sight, but it looks way too big for me. At first I thought it's some Microsoft shenanigans, or Windows screwed up my scaling settings, and then I read the changelog... Please, give us a toggle for this, I want my small and sleek counter back.

I agree the new FPS counter is too chonky and I prefer the old one.

The new one is too big and the darkened background box bothers me, it looks weird and the number not centered especially as the box does not have much left/right padding.

The one change though for the better is that it only says the number like "60" instead of "60 fps",

OMFG, it also has opaque black square background! That's even worse then large font by itself!
