The old one was subtle, barely noticeable and didn't draw attention when you weren't looking at it, but the new one feels too big (27" 1440p monitor) and it's also shown on this new black box with transparency which makes it even more noticeable without really making it easier to read.
The previous, smaller size was perfect for me; I always have it on so I can setup new games, make sure my fps limiter is still working, see if gameplay issues might be related to framerate, etc. It was small enough, that I never notice it unless I look at it purposely.
Valve, at least give us an option for size?
Please give us the option of using the previous size / font without the transparent background.
a single digit showing there seems quite big (from what i can tell in a double), but as digits get added (double, triple.... more), it simply gets bigger and bigger, it doesnt seem to (what it should be doing), is getting smaller as the number gets bigger, not the opposite.
i imagine, that first digit changing, may cover more as it changes (as the number change their shape) and even worse, past 3 digits.
also, if you notice as a game starts up, said number starts out as a single digit, but with "...." (line of dots) at the end, right before the number jumps to what its supposed to be at (i assume thats simply indication/placeholder, the overlay shows before said numbers start functioning).
https://imgur.com/a/ti6ik8l (trying to get a screenshot of single (with dots at end), which isnt easy, which the screenshot shows... and looks bugged with frozen screen due to "snipping tool")
btw, notice the size of the bugged single digit (above). i caught with "snipping tool", its way smaller/thinner.

images linked above, 4k screen with native 144hz (desktop set at 1080p), game was set at 1080p (brotato for a quick fps test), but i could only grab double/triple digits, not sure if im simply drawing a blank atm (used to be able to do this stuff when i needed, but since win 11 i cant anymore...), but none of my gpu software, including win 11 pro graphics settings, will allow me to set fps to a single digit, or allow fps past the tv's hz, thats with vsync off in-game, nivida vsync set to "game control" in global, thus no vsync, so nothing is holding it back, so i couldnt grab a single digit, or higher than 3 for a extra reference points.
can anyone else do this in their gpu software? i havent tried messing with fps settings in awhile, as i usually have them set how i want and never mess with them again.
i also agree, its quite big and distracting, always had issue finding a decent "corner" to hide it in.... but now its so big, doesnt matter where it goes, its forever distracting, noticeable and being even more intrusive by cover in-game UI stuff.
they need to either allow us to be able to change it back/change font/size, or they change it to something else, or fix w/e happened (if its a bug), willing to bet it will get a lot more attention than it has, when people start seeing the change.
edit: currently 6 (4 in beta feedback, 2 in bug reports) threads on the topic, since the update.
edit: to add, i also have the steam setting "scale steam overlay text and icons to match monitor settings" set to enabled, so it should be scaling at screens settings, but it isnt, it simply gets bigger with more digits.
have a nice day peep
I absolutely hate the changes Nvidia made to it's own FPS counter and this is more or less on the same level for me
The new one is too big and the darkened background box bothers me, it looks weird and the number not centered especially as the box does not have much left/right padding.
The one change though for the better is that it only says the number like "60" instead of "60 fps",
