1. Find the DEVICE ID:
Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs [Begin Test]
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3012578361&fileuploadsuccess=1
2. Quit Steam (might not be necessary but didn't test)
3. Navigate to:
[STEAM FOLDER] > steamapps > common > Steam Controller Configs > [STEAM USER ID] > config
4. Look for file: preferences_[DEVICE ID].vdf
Open it with Notepad/text editor and you'll see the "name" field.
Make and save change. Close file (don't know if necessary). Start Steam.
There's an entry "guide_brightness", see if setting it to zero deactivates the led
Late response to this but TYSM! Your method worked like a charm!
And also, minor correction/ disclaimer, but you do not need to exit Steam in order to rename your controller. The only time you do need to restart the client is when you want to see the changes, but apart from that every other step you mentioned in your process has worked for me flawlessly.
This worked! As did changing the number to others, like 0.25, to make it dim. But I also later discovered, this LED customizability is built into SteamOS now. Under Steam in Gaming Mode (or Desktop's Big Picture Mode) with the PS controller connected, go to Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Setting → Open → LED Settings.
On that screen, you can adjust color, saturation, and most importantly for my distracted sake, the *brightness* of the controller's LED. You can even turn it off completely. This makes a huge difference for me when gaming in the dark.
Sir, your post helped me to not only rename my DualSense controller (current UI is broken for this) but also to find the answer to why only one of my controllers had a player slot LED! Can’t thank you enough :)
