How do you rename controllers now?
With the old big picture mode i was able to rename each controller. Now with the new UI I cant rename them anymore or at least i cant find the menu for it.

This is the way I found to set it manually (haven't tested if it just sets it locally).

1. Find the DEVICE ID:
Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs [Begin Test]
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3012578361&fileuploadsuccess=1

2. Quit Steam (might not be necessary but didn't test)

3. Navigate to:
[STEAM FOLDER] > steamapps > common > Steam Controller Configs > [STEAM USER ID] > config

4. Look for file: preferences_[DEVICE ID].vdf
Open it with Notepad/text editor and you'll see the "name" field.
Make and save change. Close file (don't know if necessary). Start Steam.

There's an entry "guide_brightness", see if setting it to zero deactivates the led

Late response to this but TYSM! Your method worked like a charm!

And also, minor correction/ disclaimer, but you do not need to exit Steam in order to rename your controller. The only time you do need to restart the client is when you want to see the changes, but apart from that every other step you mentioned in your process has worked for me flawlessly.

Great info in this thread, thanks. For what it's worth, at least now in 12/23 on the latest stable release of SteamOS, this method helped me change the name of the paired controller as it appears in Desktop mode. But that name change isn't carrying over into Gaming Mode. Not a big deal for me as the Sony DualShock 4 is the only one showing as "Wireless controller." The others have distinct names so it's not too confusing. An easier way to rename paired controllers in Gaming Mode sure would be appreciated though!

This worked! As did changing the number to others, like 0.25, to make it dim. But I also later discovered, this LED customizability is built into SteamOS now. Under Steam in Gaming Mode (or Desktop's Big Picture Mode) with the PS controller connected, go to Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Setting → Open → LED Settings.
On that screen, you can adjust color, saturation, and most importantly for my distracted sake, the *brightness* of the controller's LED. You can even turn it off completely. This makes a huge difference for me when gaming in the dark.

Sir, your post helped me to not only rename my DualSense controller (current UI is broken for this) but also to find the answer to why only one of my controllers had a player slot LED! Can’t thank you enough :)

not to complicate your life, activate the big picture and from there, to the parameters and controller, there you can change the name, I have done it with my xbox elite 2

Actually, if you access Settings-Controller and see the Controler name at the top, trying to click it acts as if it's "Read Only"... BUT if you right click and PASTE (whatever text, doesn't matter) you ACCESS the writing field, and can now DELETE and BACKSPACE and then WRITE whatever name you want.
