I've come to report the same issue.

While screen recording, hitting F12 doesn't do anything, worked prior to beta client. And as mentioned by @aaueer in the overlay screen, it works fine.

Also, same as them, I'm on Linux, native installation.

Took me to long to find this, I have the same issue. Used to have it on Arch with the Steam Beta, switched to Linux Mint recently for a different reason and its still broken.

Hey there! Just found myself in the same situation but found a nice workarround. While recording you can do Shift+Tab and right click on the timeline to take a screenshot of any given moment you have recorded, so you can pose and taken screenshots afterwards too!

Oh damn, I'll have to try that out! Still tho I hope they bring back the screenshot feature in some way, having a key to press that just snaps a picture is super convenient

I've also just encountered this problem. I'm only able to take a screenshot if the Steam-Overlay is open or if background recording is disabled.
I'm running Manjaro Linux Kernel version 6.6.47

I've been having this issue since recording went up on the beta branch and it's persisting through the mainline release.

Got this too, a fix would be nice for this.

I was wondering why I couldn't screenshot. How does this even exist? Same problem here. Ridiculous. So much for the "testing" if anyone couldn't find this out. Seems quite common.

I'm on Fedora Linux and having the exact same issue while playing DS1. This is definitely a problem with Game Recording that needs to be fixed

Running Linux Mint and I think games that run natively on Linux don't have the problem, but anything running on Proton does. I turned off Game Recording for Helldivers 2, and F12 screenshots were fine. I turned on recording for The Stanley Parable, and it worked fine again.

The current workaround is setting a marker on the game recording, opening the video, and exporting the video frame as a screenshot, but at the end of the day the F12 screenshot should work in game. Yes it still works when Shift+Tab'd, but then you're taking a screenshot of the steam overlay too.

It's really puzzling that Steam can record an entire game, but not take a screenshot properly

Hey there! Manjaro User here! No longer an issue for me either. I can take screenshots while recording is active with the shortcut!
