Personally I prefer the old animations and text styles, I like the idea of the new categories and the little crosses are a nice touch to show its an expanding menu however I feel it would perhaps be nicer to take more influence from the old menu's look as I feel it is more in keeping with the rest of the site and it also feels snappier, which makes it smarter looking in a way.
Again personal opinion and so far the actual category system seems great.
