Factions
Each faction has a unique play style and origin story. The following is a brief description of each faction and the principles they operate by. Be mindful of which faction you side with.

Pirates

Pirates are factions of lawless marauders. They can attack any faction on site without provocation or reason.
They exist to profit from by stealing other factions property. Their treachery reaches almost the entire system. But they will always be hunted by the military police who strive to seize thier ships and reclaim the stolen property.
Pirates are plagued with infighting and a barbaric hierarchy system but have been known to work together on occasion to take on big heists.
Little is known about thier bases or ships only that they have conjured stories of ghost ships disappearing in an instant.

Nomads

Nomads are a space faring Faction that roam the Verse, often on the fringes of civilisation and the Law.
Nomads wander the galaxy as scavengers and skilled salvagers. They have been known to attack factions that get in thier way.
Their giant city ships are an intimidating presence wherever they roam, they have no respect for boarders or 'owners' of land and will take what resources they see fit to take.
The Police tolerate Nomads for the most part because they have bigger problems but if a Nomad ship or faction is proving to be troublesome, the police has been known to 'crack down' on thier presence....or at least try to.

Freelancers

An alliance of corporations and freelance business leaders. Also known as the civilians of the galaxy. Freelancer factions work to build thier civilisation and profit from trade, they are pure capitalists at heart and so unless there is profit to be made, won't get involved.
Freelancers live in peace in life and war in the boardroom, thier homeworld is protected by a powerful energy shield of alien construction and so are free to flourish in relative peace.
In space, the ever watchful military police will protect freelancer ships in distress.
Their ships while well protected lack the firepower of military ships.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries are independant guns for hire. usually made up of seasoned ex-military personnel. Each merc faction has principle of ethics and code of conduct that can dictate the sort of contracts they might agree to.
Other merc factions are not so careful and will follow the coin to a point. But no Merc faction has ever crossed the line...that we know of.
Mercs will not accept assassination contracts or contracts that would require illegal action but are more than happy to disable ships/bases etc for the right price.
Mercs are not an expansionist faction and operate from thier homeworld, the get thier resources through trade and contracts.

Military Police

The totalitarian guardians of peace and order in the galaxy.
A single unified force upholding the laws of the galaxy as they see fit.
Few challenge the power and reach of the military police who operate as a self governed independent military force. Patrolling the galaxy, thier ships seem to be everywhere. They will respond to a distress call with thier nearest ships and bring the hammer down on any would be breachers of the peace.
Off-duty they will trade for resources with other factions. They have been known to hire Mercs where they need some extra muscle.
Their expansionist regime is not popular among all factions and some say it is this reason the pirates have no trouble recruiting new members.
