Wine and Steam - A Major Milestone

Copied from: CodeWeavers Blog[www.codeweavers.com]

Yesterday, Valve announced a new feature in Steam Play that allows Windows titles to run on the Linux version of Steam using Wine.

We have been working directly with Valve for two years on this effort, and the launch yesterday was one of the most joyful days of my career, for a variety of reasons. First, the personal – my sons both grew up using Linux. My older son graduated from college, got a job, and eventually bought a Windows PC so he could play his favorite games. My younger son is still in college, and he remains a die hard Linux user. Last night, he was able to install and run the few Windows games he craved on his Linux laptop.

Second, the professional – I have long felt that computer games are the key to any successful computer operating system. Sure, you absolutely need to be able to do productive work on your computer, but your heart is not in it until you can play. Without that joy, Linux, and the variety of Linux based operating systems (e.g. SteamOS, ChromeOS) are going to struggle to claim a meaningful share of the market. Valve has been providing amazing support for gaming on Linux for many years now, and we are proud to join them in expanding the range of high quality games that are available to Linux users.

This still remains a long, hard journey, but perhaps this marks the beginning of the mythical Year Of The Linux Desktop.

I hope that Proton[github.com] brings you as much joy as it has brought me. And now excuse me, I have some, er, testing, to do...

- Jeremy White

PRESS RELEASE: CrossOver 16 Update Supports Office 2013, 64-bit Programs, and Includes Wine 2.0 Technology

SAINT PAUL, Minn (December 12, 2016) — CodeWeavers, Inc., developer of CrossOver—the easiest, fastest way to run Windows software on Mac and Linux—announced today the release of CrossOver 16. With CrossOver 16, you can run thousands of Windows software titles, without the need for a Windows OS license.

CrossOver 16 supports Microsoft Office 2013 on both macOS and Linux. This brings the convenience, ease, and interoperability of the full featured, modern Office suite to our Linux and macOS customers.

CrossOver 16 is the first version of CrossOver to support 64-bit Windows applications, with automatic install recipes for a few popular titles already. CrossOver 16 also incorporates code from the upcoming Wine 2.0 release, the open-source technology that allows Windows applications to be run on Unix. The net effect is that CrossOver 16 users will be able to run many more Windows applications, with enhancements to their performance and graphics.

CrossOver 16 is immediately available at www.codeweavers.com.

Wondering if your favorite Windows software title will run under CrossOver? The company’s goal is to bring expanded market opportunities for Windows software developers by making it easier, faster and more painless to port Windows software to Linux.
Last week we turned 20!

Twenty years ago this month, a fresh faced, much younger version of Jeremy White started CodeWeavers. He had four goals:

Do important and challenging work
Work with people he respects
Have fun at work
Make lots of money

CodeWeavers has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams on the first three points. The jury is still out on the fourth point. Turns out making money when you give the bulk of your work away poses a real challenge. 😊

Read more on the Official Blog Post.[www.codeweavers.com]

CrossOver 12.5 has been released!

CrossOver 12.5.0 is a major step forward from previous versions of
CrossOver. CrossOver 12.5.0 includes the latest version of Wine -
the Windows compatibility technology which underlies CrossOver. Wine
1.6 brings thousands of improvements to application compatibility.

On Mac OS X, CrossOver 12.5.0 has the "Mac Driver" technology enabled
by default for all applications. This brings improved integration
with the OS X desktop environment. The Mac Driver improves functions
such as drag-and-drop, command-tab switching, Dock and Menu Bar
integration, window transparency, international input methods, and
many more.

On Linux, CrossOver has a new user interface. A list of launchers
for all installed Windows applications is present in CrossOver's main
application window. This should help situations in which CrossOver's
desktop integration is difficult to use, which can be the case with
some modern desktop environments.

The full announcement is available here[www.codeweavers.com].

We've come a long, long away since this group was started but haven't had much discussion going on. So let's just start basic today and we'll gladly take some feedback on what users would like to see to make our community more active.

CrossOver 12.5 is in beta now.
