I myself am pretty bussy with my project so all I can do for you is give you some words.
If you have no access to reformatting the game but are convinced that the mechanics are fun, why not give it a shot with REbuilding it in UNITY? With newer grafix and stuff... I've just checked the tutourials on it a year ago and it looks like a good tool for getting into 3d games.
Have you tried TIG Source Forums or other retro gaming forums? And The idea with the students wasn't bad either!
Best way to get things done ist to do it your self =)
