Side Battle Character portraits mod
This is a quick mod I've made as soon as I've realized that modding was possible. I absolutely hate the ugly sprites that are supposed to be "portraits" of your characters on top of the command menu in battle, so I took the liberty to add actual portraits of the characters in their stead. The original image was an ugly 32 x 32, it is now 70 x 40 as well.

This kind of breaks when you go over 999HP or MP. The portraits are so huge that they get on top of the numbers and you can't see them.

I guess you (or OP) could resize the portraits or a part of them to 32x32 and use this instead of original portrait files?
