Yeah, his art is quite lovely but I can understand why people don't care for the Final Fantasy 5 concepts used as in game portraits.
For what ever reason it really seems there was a loss of communication between Amano and the sprite artists, as the in game characters bear almost no resemblance to his concept art. Compare that to say, Final Fantasy 6, where the character sprite art is about as close as you could get to his concept sketches within the limits of a 16bit era game. Assuming FF6 gets a similar port I imagine there will much less demand for a mod like this, being the portraits won't have the same clashing feel as they do with this game.
