Final Fantasy VI: The Respritening - Yoshitaka Amano Edition

Thanks for all the resources everyone. I think I will give myself some space away from the cape and focus on the other sprites for now.

And I wish that modification was available. If it was, then there would be some pretty exciting things to do. As of right now, the limitations are fine as I think I should get a couple of sheets done before worrying about wishing to make more. LOL.

As for Github. I don't really know how to use the site yet, I am sure if I actually took the time to learn it then it wouldn't be too hard. If there is a way to organize work better, I am happy to learn some more.

Here are some of the sprites that I already showed animated. To get a better idea of how it looks in motion:

Seeing the capes in motion helps. I definitely think if you swing the front view capes further with each forward arm it might flow a bit better. The laughing animation though. I'm very much in love! Flows very nicely!

As for Github, once you create an account, you need to create a repository for it to exist on. Basically, once signed in, you click the "+" at the top right corner of the page and click "New Repository". You fill in the details of the project, like the description, decide if it is private or public, and then you start it.

There's a page for how to do it on their website. I'll get it and edit it in if you might need it.

EDIT

Ah, here we go.

I'm going to be honest here. I blew a gasket when I crossed this thread. The only reason I have not yet bought this game—the only release of FFVI I have not yet bought—is because the sprites are horrendous looking. I don't know what they were thinking with the blur or whatever that it is, but it is horrible.

The sprites I have seen throughout this thread are absolutely, god damn perfect though. This has to be the coolest modding project I have ever crossed. And I'm being serious about that. I love how the sprites look like a cross between Chrono Trigger and the PSP FFIV game, but a lot more delicate and crisp looking.

Is this thread the only place to keep an eye on for updates though? Because I'm officially hyped to see more out of this! :)
Thanks for the enthusiastic support! It really does keep me motivated to push on through with this project. Some times, I am conflicted as I am not entirely sure if my art direction is what fans may really want. But as an artist, you just have to create what you want to create, and not let everyone else decide every little detail.

And as for any updates about this project, the past few days I have been working on cleaning some sprites up and focusing on Terra's sprite sheet. It is making progress but I DO find that sometimes, SOME sprites will take me FOREVER as keeping consistent for different head angles and profiles can be difficult. There is one sprite in particular that I had to take a break on because I didn't know how to implement the ponytail part.

I want to at least have an update every two weeks or so. And I think I will go ahead and show the progress that I have this Friday. And again, any artists that would like to help out, feel free to reach out to me. And for the person that mentioned Github, I will try to get something working this weekend.

Last comment from me is wanting to know how people feel about the 2/3s view from the SNES version, or the side profile from the Steam version for walking and standing on the side. What do you all think will work better for the Steam backgrounds? And does anyone know anything about being able to change the Magitek Armor? It would be a shame if this sprite I was working on wasn't able to be used...

No problem! I personally really love your style and pluckylump's style. They are exceptionally good. I know a lot of RPG Maker projects that would have killed to get their hands on a spriter like you two. I know I would have! ;)

I understand the difficulty you are having too. Consistency is one of the hardest parts of creation in pixel based art, especially if it isn't going to be static. If you need feedback to help or something, I'm sure everyone here would love to help (at least I would).

As for backgrounds, I'm not entirely sure what'll work better. I would have to see examples, but I'd say the new ones would fit your sprites better than the old due to being larger.

As for the views, original/SNES all the way. The new ones are simple side views, but the old ones offered a distinct "taste" to each sprite and had far more detail:

Original: https://ladygeekgirl.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/lockesprites.png
Steam: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/asoUr0QXZ8U/maxresdefault.jpg

However, I think the reason the Steam side views are horrendous is because they simply didn't try. A simple side view in your spriting style could look great and fit well too.

And I don't know how the repacking tool works, but if the Magitek Armor exists in the "app" as it does for any other sprite (and there is no reason it shouldn't) it should be able to be replaced. If I had the tools, I could extract my android copy or my friend's Steam copy and see if I can find the related sprite/s.
