oh trust me, .ini is capable, my game is pretty complex and it does the job just fine :D

There might be a DLL that allows you to do that, but it is not possible in GM currently, you'd need to save the vid as a .gif and import it as a sprite, have it play at the correct speed and have the sound of the vid play at the same time.

I think I mostly get the idea and most of the syntax with GM:S it's just understanding where and how to apply them so they are efficient. The game was made on a whim and if an actual programmer saw the code and how unorganised it was, they would probably faint. But remember, larger projects would probably require more than what GM offers.
For instance, I was thinking about making an RPG, with evolutions and many kinds of abilities. Thing is, I have -no- idea how to make an inventory and save system :s

For my game I am using an object based inventory, for saving you want to look up how to save using a .ini file in gamemaker, it is what I currently use although I am thinking about switching to .JSON (which you can google, too).

Just so you know, it was in one of nocturne's dev blog posts on the YOYO games website, I used to read them and I remember him having dealt with something like this for his lighting system and he mentioned a name of a tile based system that does what you want but I forgot it. So still searching :).
