I still don't know for sure. I think it's because the more reputation you have (the more positive comments you have) people will trade stuff with you.

Comments are like one of the first thing people check to get a quick idea of what that person is like and if they're trustworthy, so "rep for rep" is just pretty much a "win-win" trade with someone else
