Clarity of purpose was my relief from depression. I know what >I< want to live for, whom to live for; all other goals flow from that. Goals that I set, rather than goals set by someone else.
There are many people who follow that idea. However, the day that you are born, a rule has already been set before you. Since you were born, you will die. Then comes more rules brought on by your mortality. Then comes rules from the previous generation that effects what you can experience. Then comes rules of what you must use in order to get items. You can set goals for yourself, sure, but those goals are set up from the past and the present. You can not become King of the Roman Empire, or kill Hitler when he started his dictatorship, or become as famous as Steven King before there was a Steven King. Goals have already been set up by someone else. You just get to choose which ones you can pick.
I think that is a very good point, and completely agree. In my personal opinion, I would say that there is no "freedom of choice" as most people would think it, in that we don't actually get to choose our beliefs and actions. When it comes down to it, our actions are already determined before they happen. After all, we are not truly arbitrary or random. There are reasons behind our actions - the question is, can we determine what they are?
Our thoughts and beliefs are determined by what we learn from the earliest moment we start taking things in, well before we're even self-aware. No idea just spontaneously happens. Every consideration stems from, or is influenced by, what else came before it.
Our actions follow suit. We have all sorts of likes, dislikes, fears, goals, hopes, etc. There is a complex mishmash of factors underlying our every action. We do not randomly choose what to eat, wear, do, think, or say. We may think, "Oh but it is my choice whether I eat an apple or an orange (or both)". But oh, it really isn't. It is within our ability to consider the selection, but whichever option we take is determined by our preferences, goals and expectations, which were already defined.
That is, of course, no excuse to act as we please. Predetermination does not negate ethical and moral conduct. People's physical and emotional integrity remain very real factors, and respect remains a reasonable expectation. Though I'm sure we all have our fail moments. Reading again my last post sure makes me face palm. It was kind of brisk~
