Wiki of Conclusions. Was: RE: Phishing Bots and How to Stop Them
Hey Blue Screen of Dea†h,

Originally posted by Blue Screen of Dea†h:
A wiki is a dedicated application/site and we have no interest in running one. Wikis are also not designed to discuss things, but to provide a collection of information about a certain subject. A problem should not be rewarded with a site to talk about it, it should be solved by the only party that can do something about it, in this case Steam. A new thread explaining the matter is expected to replace the current one.

A dedicated application that displays all site conclusions about site topics is what I believe is needed for a verity of site topics. Articles would be written by admins with article topics like good trading etiquette, effective trading post content, how to handle scammers, how to properly use the forum, and so on.

One article could be Phishing. Article information could be:

  • Here is what phishing is and how it works.
  • Here is how to spot phishing and avoid it.
  • If you are approached by a phisher, here is what to do.
  • Here are the phishing countermeasures TF2 Outpost has implemented and how they are effective.
  • Here are possible countermeasures that would not be effective for TF2 Outpost and why.
  • For discussion about this topic, follow this forum link...

I fail to see how a wiki "rewards" a problem. Instead, I see this as a way to avoid forum posts asking the same questions over and over and over again. "Thank you for asking, but that question has been answered. Here is the wiki page going over all the current conclusions about that topic. Once you have reviewed that article, please feel free to post discussions about any confusion or omission found in the article." Discussion about topics would still occur on the forum while conclusions appear in a wiki run by site admins. As conclusions change (site policies, trading methods, phishing tactics, etc.) the wiki would be updated with the most relevant information.

The message I received from your comment was, "We are not interested in plainly and clearly conveying conclusion information about TF2 Outpost and related activities in a concise format. Instead, forum posts that can spread for hundreds of replies over dozens of pages should be utilized to convey conclusions per discussion topic."

Will you expand your explanation of how a "collection of information about a certain subject" (in this case, TF2 Outpost and related activities) is worse for site users rather than repeated forum posts?

Thanks again and have a great day!

Joe.

As BSoD mentioned there will be a new topic replacing the current one that will include all the points mentioned by you as well as answers to the most asked questions. There is absolutely no need for a wiki site dedicated to this when you can have a forum topic that addresses everything to direct uses to.

If this were true, why are my questions and suggestions being dismissed as "we already know" when the locked phishing thread does not list the conclusions in the main post? Is the post just neglected? What about other topics not in the four pinned topics? Does TF2 Outpost not care that much about promoting good trading etiquette or other things? Can we see how conclusions changed over time in the new threads? Just checking.

The new topic is in the works and will contain everything that needs to be known about phishing, I don't see how you see that as your suggestions being "dismissed". I also don't understand how you've come to the conclusion that TF2Outpost does not care about promoting good trading etiquette. The staff's job is to provide a clean and safe environment for users to promote their trades. The rules page contains the most basic things that a trader should know about the "do"s and "don't"s on the website and trading in general.

If somebody wishes to create a wiki about tips, trading etiquette, effective post content etc. they are free to do so. That is not TF2Outpost's job as the staff's time is already limited.

My dismissal interpretation came from the speed in which my threads were locked before my understanding of the topic was complete.

Of the other existing threads I have read, the vibe I received was, "Phishing: not our problem, sorry." If my site were being used for nefarious reasons, I would at least attempt to do everything I could to stop it, not just state nothing could be done. At the very least, I would try to fully educate users to the phishing problem.

Phishers are making this environment much less clean and safe. What is the staff going to do about phishing scrapers using this site? Nothing?

My understanding was that TF2 Outpost was a leading trade site. My hope is that leaders will lead.
SteamRep is now taking the active role of "educating" the community when it comes to trading. We are a platform for traders to find and meet their peers. We handle hundreds of site-related reports every single day and we do our best to keep our community away from scammers. We don't have time, money or interest in running a secondary website to discuss things.

As for the phishing problem, Sneeza has addressed it earlier. And Norby properly rephrased my previous posts to address your other topics.
