Are there consequences for saying duped unusuals are clean?
Hey, first post on this group. Are there consequences for offering high value items such as unusuals and proclaiming them to be clean when they are not? Just curious. Someone offered me a "clean cloudy moon phantom" and I rather carelessly accepted under the assumption he was telling the truth about the phantom's cleanliness. I only checked the history via outpost and at the time his name was at the top. I should have checked another source such as backpack.tf, I accept my mistake and it wasn't that much of a loss but I'm rather disappointed.

The seller knew that backpack.tf had the red duped flag on but still said "its not duped, bp.tf says it is, but i looked through the histories".

Not asking for any kind of revenge or anything, maybe this particular person really didn't think his phantom was duped, but I'm just disappointed that he knew that backpack.tf showed him it's duped anyways. What's done is done and I'm fine with the phantom to be honest. I'm simply curious if penalties may be applicable for this sort of behaviour, especially in cases when the trader is aware of their hat's status. It's bad practise and makes a difference in the pricing of some hats.

tl;dr saying unusual hat is clean when not=ban/tempban/caution/nothing or what?

Well some people honestly don't know and maybe honestly believe they have a clean hat but if you say it is clean without any evidence, even after one tells you it is duped you will get banned.

Then of course though off topic the hat could be clean at the time of the sell and then duped later by valve because of a scammed bp. Time makes a difference as I unfortunately found out.

Am aware and entirely possible, I keep track of that. However, in this case the phantom seems to be long time duped. I get what you mean though.

It's also interesting to note that Steam Market makes no distinction between duped hats and clean ones. Valve themselves apparently don't seem to think there's any stigma attached to a duped hat.

Why would they? I mean seriously I know unusuals have thier own ID's number and such but when it comes down to valve and dupes "in my opinion only" I think they take the lazy way out. I'm not the brightest bulb on the block but it seems to me that when replacing scammed items instead of just duping them they could somehow take out a specific unopened level number and scammed hats are then replaced with non duped. What I'm saying might not actually be possible but the entire process from valve duping to dupes on the market boils down to a just dont't give a #$^% approach.
