What are the main roles of the vice president?
I know that he can be used to defend policies better than the president sometimes and can work well with congress and is pretty darn useful during elections (Biden with Obama) but can anyone think of any other reasons?

Forgot to mention how valuable they are in elections at balancing the ticket.

Well, not a US citizen, but from my general knowledge.

The Vice is the President of the Senate, although according to the constitution, holds no vote other than in the case of a tie.

Obviously, he serves as the stand in president in the event of the premature ending of the presidents term, due to death or otherwise. The senate then picks a temporary Vice from one of their own.

The majority of his other roles are mostly ancilliary, and entirely informal.

Incidentally, nothing gets by me.
