Does anyone have any clue why Valve decided to remove the /me command?

People were using it to impersonate valve employees and scam others.

Were they really? I mean... wouldn't Valve just have to change what colors only Valve can use?

Like, can't Valve just make themselves type in obnoxious orange?

But Valve employees never had a different color, they have a tag next to their names that nobody else has. People will use the ignorance of others not knowing about the /me function to impersonate an employee no matter what color you allow.

Eh, yeah, but it's really bumming me out that a few people had to ruin it for everyone. I'm missing /me a lot more than I should.

It wasn't about impersonating Valve employees. It was removed because they could be easily confused with system messages. An increasing amount of scammers took advantage of that and abused it to trick people into thinking they can transfer wallet from one account to another. (which isn't that implausible after the release of the market)

Many people miss a feature when removed. The various roleplay communities have taken it very hard. I sadly only learned about the feature once it was announced it was being taken out.

That's the second time in 5 minutes you've got in a post right before me, you have some decent timing. I never knew about that part of scamming tactics, but it does make a lot of sense as another reason to remove it for the sake of precaution.

Yeah, but part of me doesn't understand why we couldn't change the color of the messages or /me or something to keep it.

I guess Valve assumed that the security of its users is a bigger priority than a feature that only a fraction would find important. The majority of people probably didn't even know about its existance and those who did can learn to live without it or find other means of describing actions.

*continues to complain about /me being gone*

Point proven.

well, part of it could be that steam as a messenger is notoriously out of date and primitive. We just recently got the ability to send offline messages and have a chatlog (that only goes back a few previous messages). There is still no invisible status that lets you see who is on and offline without yourself appearing online, and most other simple things that have been requested for years.

Sorry to say, but I think this is just them not really having a premium chat service as a priority.

Who cares, steam chat is at least steam chat. Better than nothing.
