First time Perma Banned for have profile set to "friends of friends only"

Can someone shed some light on this rather drastic action? Just checked now after not being online for a while and my seemingly rational and coherent appeal has apparently been rejected without comment. As I am more of a TF2 player than trader I would just like to hear some justification more than anything, so any official response would be greatly appreciated (I'm assuming you can see my appeal on tf2op).

User rule 5: No private profiles or private backpacks — not only is it suspicious, but it also prevents the website from functioning properly.
Just make your profile public then the ban will most likely be lifted.
