Key price discussion.
Hey all! :)

So I've just got back on Tf2OP from a one day ban, and while I understand that this was for a reason I had not read in the rules (Public humiliation - though not intended to humiliate, more to demonstrate I don't mess about), the secondary reason was that the trade was in fact a "Troll Trade" & "Price Manipulation". The trade in question is here: http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10382892

Now, while I know I've done wrong by public humiliation (Of which I wrote a full letter of apology to the mod whom banned me(which was subsequently ignored)), I feel that calling this a troll trade is unjust. I was simply trying to demonstrate the idea that keys were that price and should be that price. As for calling this price manipulation, well of course it is, but It's no worse than the people who are charging well over 5 ref a key, it's just pure greed, and that's fine, apparently!

Was I doing wrong by trying to reset the key prices? Was I doing wrong by trying to help the little guys starting out in TF2? I just get the overarching feeling that this community is turning into some sort of economy driven by greed, much like governments in real life, does anyone else feel this? I was only trying to make a small change, and I instantly get beaten down by admins/mods of the communities, without trial, or even a message.

Also out of nowhere, my buying thread was also called a "troll trade": http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/11489783

Share your thoughts anyway, is this really the way things are going? I don't think I'm going to be in trading for much longer if it is!

Key prices are absolute bullcrap, 5 ref is a bit much, oh I remember when keys were just 2 ref, those were the days.

The issue here is that while you're quite justified in your dislike of the current exchange rate of keys, you're simply clogging up the site with trades that have effectively zero chance of happening besides a possible rare occurrence. Many others have made "activist" trades and such trying to rally people to "change prices" back to what they were some time ago, but you're trying to push back against market pressure and force an item with a cost to have an exact exchange rate with a free item.

The market has spoken, and has said that the exchange rate is around 5 refined for a key, because that is what people feel comfortable buying and selling for. It isn't going back to the old days, no matter how much some want them to.
The precise reason keys are going up has to do with an equilibrium it must reach. Refined metal sells for $0.34 in a Paypal exchange. Doing the math means that, at the current trade price (5.44), the key would be around $1.80+ on paypal which it is. Once you factor in fees it comes in a little above that. The trade price of keys will have to rise until it is no different from the mann co store or steam market price once converted. That is anywhere between 6.33 and 7.44.

Now you ask yourself, "who is paying that?". It is not the average player. It is bulk traders or in many cases, ref farmers who dont care how much they pay in ref for a key.
