Phishing Link Protection Script
Hello, I just wrote this quick script that warns you if a link is suspicious on tf2outpost, and disables it.

Yep. Only currently applies to links pretending to be steamcommunity pages.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/174246

To install on chrome:
1. Install https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tampermonkey/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo?hl=en
2. Go here http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/174246 and click install.
3. There you go!

To install on Firefox:
1. Install https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/
2. Go here http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/174246 and click install.
3. There you go!

Enjoy, I will hopefully have the time to update it for you all for better protection.

This is exactly what I've been suggesting to be implemented in the phishing topic.

You can warn users about phishing sites when clicking on a link, but when each link gives you the same warning people will completely ignore it after a while and it will have the same effect as if there was no warning at all. That's why there needs to be a better way to detect phishing links, just like this script does, the user should be given a different warning (similar to when you view a scammer's profile on Steamrep).

People will be less likely to fall for a scam when there's a huge flashing warning shown to them. If they still fall for it, it's entirely their fault.

That and new tf2outpost users should have a posting limit/posting throttle to stop them from spamming phishing links effectively using a throw away account. This alone would make it less worth it to go through the effort to make accounts for phishing.

Hell, new accounts should not be able to post links at all for a period. I'm sure that would stop it.

If posting links were made a donator bonus, that would probably be the ultimate solution.

All these suggestions targeting the phishers are not definitive solutions. You don't allow new accounts? They'll use old accounts. The only effect they would have is slowing them down a bit, it wouldn't stop them at all, people would fall for them just as easily.

That's why the best solution isn't to target the phisher at all (as this would affect normal users as well, like posting links being a donator feature), you need to inform the user about phishing links. Tell them "This is a phishing link, it's bad, don't click just report it!".

What will happen is that people will be unlikely to fall for them anymore which in turn means that phishers won't be as successful as before and they'll eventually give up, realizing it's a waste of time and energy.

Solution doesn't have to be perfect. Its the cost that matters.

Why does spam count in the billions probably...because each attempt costs close to nothing. Sure a phisher can use old account but its a rather large cost to pay to burn or steal old accounts. At a certain point things stop being worth it.

Imagine if sending an email cost 5 cents. 5 cents is nothing to people, but you can bet it would stop most spam because it would become uneconomical to try.
Steam accounts cost nothing. They have no reason to stop.

We are discussing the phishing problem internally, but I can't say what/if something will be done at this moment.

So I just found out tf2r has been emitted from it.
If anyone wanted to put it in, just go to
chrome-extension://dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo/options.html and on line 13, add ,"tf2r.com". Incase you haven't realised, it's for chrome. Sorry to kinda go off outpost related topic here, but it's related to the script itself.

There is always a cost, time;) Road blocks do matter, even scummy people value their time.
