As for inside the trade, I believe that the key is a formal, but not ice cold approach. I never ask someone how they are feeling or anything like that in trade, since to me, that seems overly familiar. My general approach for a pre-designated trade (i.e. I already know what they're buying) is:
Hi, how can I help you?
(Response)
<Quote's agreed price>
(Trades)
Thanks, have a nice day.
(Response)
Remove.
It's not rushing or hastening the other person, but it's business like, and polite. Obviously, the same tenants carry over to negotiations.
That's just my take on what trading should be like, as for the unsavory people in the community, don't fret, everyone has them, just chat strategically to avoid potential disputes, that's my policy.
Also trading can be frustrating, when the 99th person adds you who completely ignores your notes you begin losing your cool and you start saying stuff you don't want. I'm usually a patient person but it's been times when I've been ticked off by some idiots that really made me angry.
Lowballing barely exists. People call any offer they don't like "a lowball" which is quite pathetic. There is a difference between making a margin for profit, and legitimately offering a stupidly low price.
Not making reference to your statement obviously, but just to the statement on a whole.
Lowballing is very rampent on OP (or any other trade site) when dealing with items worth several keys or more.
I do not see much low balling for trivial things like hats (with the exception of the assholes who offer 1 ref for a hat), low value strange weapons(non salvaged), or tools. Someone maybe offers less but offering 1.22 on something worth 1.33 is not a lowball, offering .66 is. Where as with unusuals or high value items I'll get a 1 bud offer on a 3 bud item or some bullshit like that.
You don't go into a store and say "Walmart charges this price, so you should charge it to"
Respect the trader, and they will respect you back!
