It's a short game, but for £2.09, I can't really argue. As a point and click adventure game, it's nothing that taxing, but the logic is more or less sensible aside from the occasional moment where the game is a little unclear about what to do next, but that's nothing uncommon in the genre. I stumbled upon this game by chance and it's a shame more people don't seem to have discovered it as it is a hidden little gem and I hope that the dev decides to take another stab at a game like this as I certainly would play it.

Where to begin?

Dark Souls is an RPG by Japanese developer FromSoftware where you play as a cursed undead who wakes up in asylum and fights to try to undo their curse while being the pawn to the plots of the NPCs you meet throughout the game. Like many RPGs, you chose a starting class (which is just about stats and won't matter in the lategame) and customise your character. From the enemies and bosses you kill, you gain a currency called souls which you use to level up at bonfires, upgrade equipment or to buy from merchants. You lose your souls when you die and have to reach your bloodstain before you die again to recover them.

You use an item called humanity and reverse your hollowing at bonfires to bring yourself back to a human form that you lose upon your death. The benefit of this form are that you can summon other players into your game when you're struggling with a boss, an optional multiplayer feature but one that might be useful nevertheless. The downside to this form is that other players can invade you and murder you at almost any time.

If you don't like these interactions, you may have to disconnect yourself from the internet to play offline.

I've had this in my library for a while and only played up to reaching Lordran until recently when I decided to play the game from start to finish and it was worth it. Dark Souls is a truly magical experience that shouldn't be missed, even if it is the most ♥♥♥♥ ripping game in the world.

It will punish you. It will make you hate yourself. It will make you feel like a golden god when you kill a boss, or when you see that final credits sequence. 99% of deaths in this game I say were my fault, it's just that this game isn't very forgiving though more or often than not if you are careful you can recover your souls upon death.

Less than half of all players so far have gotten past the firsts boss! Don't be like them, grow some courage and go for it!

Just note:
  • You will probably need a controller since keyboard controls are not great. An Xbox 360 or a PS3 controller with Xinput is recommended. Don't use MotionJoy, that thing is just a Chinese Trojan Horse.
  • This game is optimised TERRIBLY on PC. If you are a hardcore PC gamer and need your 60fps with anti aliasing, or just want to fix some bugs then you will need DSfix
  • This is an RPG, if you're not a fan of that genre then you will not like it.
  • For the love of God, do not picked Deprived as your starting class if you are a first time player.
  • NEVER kill friendly NPCs, you will lose out on whatever function they provide otherwise. You will also accumilate sin which you can be punished for you unless you pay the Confessor at the Undead Parish.

If you enjoy this game, I'm currently enjoying Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin right and will right a review for that when I'm done because I do have a few complaints about that one.

Probably one of the best indie RPGs I've ever played.

Like the description says, you can play it without killing a single enemy, but that doesn't mean that play style is boring and without gameplay!

Just got the true ending and I can say the story is top notch as is the music. About to start the genocide run.

Brb, probably about lock myself in my wardrobe and cry.

You might look at this and think it's another one of those "simulator games" like airport simulator, car mechanic simulator, airport firefighter simulator, but it isn't. There's just something cathartic about just sticking on a podcast, wasting an entire day trucking around europe and watching your little company grow with episodes of the co-optional podcast playing in the background.

The game is well polished, I play with a keyboard and mouse because I am poor, but if you have a steering wheel I hear that you can have a lot of fun with the manual driving for a more realistic experience.

tl;dr - It's like playing Elite: Dangerous with no combat and of course no illegal cargo (But I'm sure there's probably a mod for that.)

Gambled away all my money
Gained it back by raiding the FBI various times, breaking into military bases, robbing diamond stores and stealing rare diamonds
Burned all my money in a weird night of drunkardness
Woke up with a throbbing headache
Couldn't remember how to carry bags or how to fire an smg
But at least I have these cool sunglasses to show for it.

7.8/10 - Too much water

I picked it up because I was buying some games on Steam, didn't know much about it and I didn't expect much from it.

What I got was something completely different to what I expected! The story is mind blowing, the puzzles are as they always should be in a point and click, however the combat is a terribly weak part of the game (thankfully there are only a small number of combat sections in the game) and it isn't without bugs, but for such a small team to create this...

I know I haven't said much about the plot, but I'm not going to. Play it for yourself, playing it without knowing anything is the best way to play it.

Easily one of the best action RPGs available on Steam. The dialogue choices really do make an impact and they're not black and white as with most games (Namely Mass Effect). I actually personally don't think that the combat is really all that bad and some parts of the game are a bit like Deus Ex - If you think you can always go out all guns blazing, you're going to die. A lot.

I don't see how this didn't get reviewed higher than it did, maybe Obsidian/SEGA didn't pay them enough.

UPDATE: Still recommend the game, but I encountered a bug on my second playthrough where I tranqed a guard without realising another guard was watching, but they didn't react and their AI broke. They just stood and stared at it without sounding an alarm or even noticing me when I ran passed several times.

If you're viewing this, you might be an enthusiast of the popular HBO television series based on the "Song of Ice and Fire" books by George R. R. Martin. So, this of course must be the perfect game for you.

Ooooh, you'd be dead wrong.

The combat is repetitive and the story is quite linear from what I've seen so far.
There is also a stupid system where you must have weaknesses for your character, such as athsma or being a psycopath.
