I bought Rainworld expecting a harsh platformer and what I got was the most immersive survival game I have ever played

Rainworld is a world with a harsh environment with harsh bodies of water, bottomless pits, an ecosystem where nearly every creature wants to eat you and has the means to stop you, catch up to you, out manoeuvre you, even the plant life has adapted to taking hold of the player for nutrients, all tied together with a harsh rain cycle that keeps all of the ecosystem moving fast before rainfall.

Creatures are designed to simply hunt for food and then find shelter before rainfall, they will use any tactic to chase or deceive pray and go in for the kill.

One of the first frustrating moments that opened my eyes on the game was when I had camped the exit of a pipe to snatch some food coming through the pipe, I then tried heading back to hibernate only to have a lizard patiently waiting at the other end to instantly snatch me, I had just died to the same tactic that I was utilizing. This moment was frustrating but it opened my eyes to just what this game was about.

You are not the main character, the world is not designed for the player, the player simply has to survive.

And to tie together the stellar art design, presentation and procedural animation is a simple but stunning story with 1 set piece in particular involving 1 region with an abundance of colourful flies that had me shocked when i reached what was at the centre of it. This moment has become my favourite moment in any media, this game suddenly untangled and I had come to realise that I was barely scratching the surface.

And then I was stunned yet again when I had made the decision to continue my climb to find what could even be up here. The sight was to stunning for me to even realise I was above the clouds, free from the rain, I could have a moment of piece.

This game is my favourite game of all time, it is a hard game to get people to try but I think the game at least deserves a look, rain world may be the first and last game of its type to capture such a sprawling ecosystem in this way to be believable but still otherworldly.

Some recommendations:

If you are feeling frustrated but still want to experience the game, don't be afraid to play as the MONK instead of SURVIVOR, the game throws less enemies your way and you need less food, sure it might not showcase how harsh the world is but any experience of the game is better than none.

If the game is too harsh but you still want to experience it, I suggest trying the Jolly co-op mod (which is being made official with the upcoming dlc.) The game lacks the loneliness playing like this but makes up for it with the frantic moments of running away as a little cat tribe, frantically trying to save your siblings life or both trying to stay quiet so the creatures don't notice you.

After getting all achievements I can confidently say that Rainworld is my favourite game of all time.

And it just might become yours if you give it the chance.

TL;DR: A Well crafted world with a simple and easy to understand moveset that is worth trying for an hour before deciding on if you like what it has to offer or if you just aren't the type of player to get invested in its world and get a refund.

I am not into metroidvanias, but hollow knight is a game that is so painfully obviously built with love and care with attention to detail around every corner.

I had some difficulties feeling lost along the way, but I loved charting out my map and using the in-game pins to mark locations of interest on my map, or for marking a spot that looked like I needed some sort of new ability to get through.

My only gripe I had with the game was with the fast travelling system, a lot of my time was spent walking between benches just because I had taken a wrong turn or had walked down a path to find another area I couldn't enter yet with my current abilities. This also annoyed me with 1 of the boss fights requiring me to walk all the way back to it multiple times, though this would of course dampen the exploration emphasis of the game a fair bit.

I beat the game with a 67% completion rating and I feel fulfilled with my playthrough, don't feel ashamed to beat the game without a full completion rating as I had felt like I had done everything I wanted to do before I could call my journey complete. Perhaps I will come back to explore some of the hidden secrets once I have a nostalgic memory of the game.

Even if you are not into metroidvanias, this game is deserving of a chance, I think the first hour and a half of the game do it justice before you feel like deciding on a refund or not, so certainly give it a try.

I have conflicting feelings with this game

Outer wilds is one of the most well put together games I have ever played, The physics simulation, the art design, the different planets and the individual puzzles and challenges that come with navigating the different climates.

The world feels like it was built perfectly to fit in with the time loop mechanic the game is infamously known for, keeping track of notes and writing things down gave me the same "aha!" feeling I got from Phoenix wright or Obra dinn.

However, I just simply didn't find the story being told intriguing, I loved Obra dinn and the story it was telling but with outer wilds, I never once felt invested in the world I was constantly reliving with the time loop.

I can recall a lot of the planets, object names, rules of the world, but with my 15 hours play time, I could MAYBE recall 1 or 2 character names. My biggest gripe with the game is that with the nature of the game, there is a requirement for characters and ancient alien text that help give detail and backstory to particular landmarks and objects, however it is ALL just text.

I had moments of my playthrough devoted to just reading paragraph after paragraph of 2-4 aliens in the past having a conversation about their newest invention or the properties of a particular material. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but the world and its story was failing to captivate me and having to essentially do my homework was not helping that in any way.

The story itself is extremely well put together, it is not easy to create a world and story that can be tackled in any order, give hints to other places to give the player something new to learn as well as making sure the player has visited essentially every place in the world before discovering a way to break out of the cycle.

I beat the game, It was a gratifying moment to put all the pieces together and do one final loop and get to experience the ending sequence, it was a good sendoff to the game itself.

But again, the world just simply didnt manage to captivate me like it did for so many others.

There was even one character that appeared during the games sendoff that I didn't even recognise and was convinced that I had never met him before, only to realise that I had seen him before about 8 hours into my experience.

I think this game deserves a look by everyone, It comes off as one of those games that I think everyone should at minimum, give a shot.

Don't feel ashamed if you don't enjoy the game during your first 2 hours.

I am happy I got to experience the conclusion of the game without watching a playthrough of the game, but I also wish I had refunded the game before I had spent 2 hours on the game.

Give the game a shot, it didn't do it for me but maybe it'll do it for you

Co-op elements similar to Left 4 Dead 2 or Payday 2.
Late game class and weapon variety like Team fortress 2.
In-game cosmetics feel satisfying to grind for, genuinely fun trying out and combining different cosmetics.
Good difficulty settings to let new players enjoy and keep the game interesting for veterans

Only thing I could ask for is 1-2 new mission types or some extra variety in some of the already existing missing types (namely escort duty)

A MUST HAVE if you play with a small group of pals often and enjoy PVE

I could play this game forever, though sitting through the begging of the game over and over again gets annoying.

Sometimes I think about how I didn't like the multiplayer, the campaign, along with some of things regarding zombies, but then it hits me.

Steam Workshop™ support for zombies custom maps and weapons.
