I've played many games, both in the base-building and survival genre. When I play this game I can't help but remember the hype behind the Scrap Mechanic survival mode, however, Volcanoids has succeeded where they failed. Though you may not have the same freedom that Scrap Mechanic provides when building, this game understands exactly how the player should feel when fighting steampunk robots and running around with friends blowing up enemy drillships. The game does not drag you down with unnecessary survival mechanics, your goal is to conquer the cogs, not nature. This is further enforced as you have to dive below the surface to avoid the volcano, requiring you stay near your drillship. Your drillship also acts as your base, instead of spending your time building a base and filling it with your production facilities and surrounding with more and more defenses, you live out of your drill(which still has plenty of customizability). Which also allows you to rapidly traverse the map, though the map is still small enough to cross when needed(especially when your friends are running around doing their own things), to get to resource deposits as you need them. You must also attack the cogs to get the necessary resources to research better parts for your ship. These parts also allow you to access new sections of the map(whether it be further underground or a new section of the surface, that is blocked by natural barriers on the surface) that are more difficult(just like the Subnautica depth meter). This game and its multiplayer is also extremely stable. It also has a healthy modding community(with multiplayer compatibility) and consistent updates and developer communication. Despite not playing for almost exactly a year, my saves are still intact and I hope to see more updates as I follow this game.
