THC (Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, also known as hemp, which contains more than 400. Among those identified and best known today are THC, CBD (Cannabidiol), CBG (Cannabigerol), and CBN (Cannabinol). 'Cannabis is a plant that dates back 8,000 years BC,' explains Dr. Sophie Captier Valette, an addiction specialist. It was used very early in medicine to relieve pain in various conditions such as endometriosis, digestive pains, rheumatism, gout, malaria, constipation... It was only in 1964 that scientist Raphael Mechoulam highlighted that there are several types of cannabinoids. Hemp is a very delicate plant. Depending on where it is grown, humidity, temperature, and soil quality, it will produce THC or CBD or other cannabinoids.

THC is the molecule from cannabis that consumers seek for its psychoactive effects, while CBD is more valued for its therapeutic benefits (such as aiding sleep, providing extreme relaxation of the body and mind, and reducing pain).

The THC consumer feels muscle relaxation, well-being, an euphoric state as well as a state of intoxication. 'They seek to anesthetize themselves to forget, to stop thinking,' describes Dr. Sophie Captier Valette. They also seek all the therapeutic, analgesic, and hypnotic effects provided by the cannabis plant molecule. The higher the THC content, the more significant the relaxing effects.

The effect occurs quickly within the first 15 minutes and lasts for a few hours. "It all depends on how it is dosed," the specialist clarifies. "But what is certain is that the effect is faster when smoking THC because the smoke passes through the gaseous pathways." The presence of THC can be detectable in the body several hours after consumption.

At the cellular level of the brain, tetrahydrocannabinol has psychoactive effects. THC consumption induces negative effects on the brain, such as difficulties in concentration and sleep disorders. It also increases stress levels. Additionally, consuming THC harms the development of adolescent brain cells, which are still maturing. Finally, tetrahydrocannabinol is a highly addictive substance. Moreover, THC molecules bind with CB1 receptors located in certain areas of the brain. This binding with CB1 receptors has detrimental effects on the brain, potentially altering perception ability and motor coordination. The association with CB1 receptors can also induce notable effects on emotionality and appetite. Again, the higher the THC content, the greater the notable effects.

THC, which has been the subject of scientific studies, tends to induce hunger. Beware of the paradoxical effect, as consuming it in excessive amounts or too frequently may lead to excitement and loss of appetite. "At high doses, it also increases the risk of strokes and lung problems...", the specialist points out.The risks of a 'bad trip' exist. "It's not just about having a bad experience when consuming cannabis," emphasizes the addiction specialist. "It also carries the risk of revealing underlying psychiatric disorders such as psychoses, depressive states, acute delirium...". THC consumption affects memory. There are problems with acquisition, learning difficulties, and also memory loss. "A study shows a decrease in IQ and growth in young people who started smoking around the age of 15 and regularly," notes the specialist. The detrimental impact is felt in terms of knowledge acquisition among high school students and college students, but also on professional performance among adults.

THC induces psychological dependence at the level of brain cells, rather than physical dependence. Withdrawal lasts for 6 weeks. "THC remains in the body for 6 weeks, more precisely stored in fat," mentions Dr. Sophie Captier Valette. There is first a physical phase of about 2 weeks during which the pro-consumer will have negative thoughts, the THC level decreases in the body which can cause sweating and muscle pain. The next 2 weeks mark a psychological phase during which the consumer confronts their emotions and reality. Then finally comes a more social phase where he rediscovers everything that is happening around him. "Hospitalization is not always systematic; it depends on the patient's willingness to manage his withdrawal autonomously," explains the specialist. If he feels capable, he will see his doctor regularly throughout the stages of withdrawal (every week or every two weeks). If it is too difficult, he can be hospitalized. He is then cut off from his environment and, above all, from the ritual he has established (going to get his dose, settling in, rolling...) without necessarily resorting to substitute medications.
