Early Access Review
I loved shapez, so I expected I would at least like this one. I had also tried a previous build of shapez 2 for free and thought it was neat, but nothing too special. It didn't seem as fun or engaging as the original was.

However, as soon as I sat down to start shapez 2 in this state, I was hooked! I love it even more than the first one!
I haven't gotten through much of the game (I haven't even played for an hour yet), but I already feel like there's so much to do, and that the things I do have significance to my progression.

To explain what I mean by this: shapez has you making various shapes to upgrade the speed of certain machines. This is (at least in the very early game) the only "optional" content to do while waiting for the main shape you're supposed to get to arrive.

Meanwhile in shapez 2, doing the "optional" side-tasks earns you "Research Points" that you can spend on a multitude of things. You can still spend them on upgrading the speed of various things, but you can also unlock new variants of machines with these points, as well as different floors. And, the tasks you do to gain these points are numerous. No longer are you only able to do one side-task because you haven't unlocked the machine that colors the shapes yet-- now you can do a whole 8 shapes total via two linear paths of shapes that get progressively more complicated. And the game rewards you for doing these more complex task by giving you more research points.

This is such a good change, and it seems that loads more small tweaks to the gameplay just like this have been made. I am so excited to play through more of this game!

In addition, the 3D aspect of this game works way better than I thought it would. Rotating the camera around just feels plain right-- I can't imagine this game any other way. And I love how you don't have to rotate shapes before sending them into the vortex(?), it just happily sucks them up no matter which corner of the shape I send in!

The progression seems to have been sped up a little bit too-- for instance the "tunnels" of shapez seem to be unlocked from the start in shapez 2 in the form of a variant of the normal conveyor.

Performance-wise, I average bout 60-70 fps with an RTX 3060 on extreme graphics with WQHD while playing, which is acceptable for a game like this in my opinion. It looks pretty decent too-- a very nice upgrade from shapez for sure!

I would 100% recommend this game so far, the tobspr Games has done an amazing job at making a sequel to an already great game.

Sorry for the erratic pacing/formatting of this review, I hardly have any experience with writing reviews. I only write reviews for games that I really, really love, and this is sure as heck one of them so far!

Edit: whoops, forgot to mention the music! Both games have pretty good music, and if I'm not mistaken shapez 2 threw in either remixed versions of some tunes from shapez, or just straight up put some of the music from that game into this one. Either way, I can't complain; both games have the unique quality of being excellent sources of background music while doing something else (like writing/editing this review).

This game is amazing.
I would only recommend it to people that won't smash their keyboard against their head 👍
Overall, very frustrating at times, but that makes it all the more rewarding to finally beat the level you're on.
Music is overall great, and my favorite part is probably the level editor. Even just making levels to play while I'm stuck on a main level is a blast!
Neo Cosmos dlc is very fun, and I love the new mechanics it introduces, even if I'm not very good with them.
