Bought this game because I heard it was seriously messed up. It is, in fact, seriously messed up. 10/10

And old west open world survival game was the one kind of survival game I actually wanted. Unfortunately, it was made by cash-grab developers.

Like everyone says, it's a bad update, even for free. Weaves were a bad idea, and this is worse. But if this is what it takes to finally get some bugfixes and disk size optimization, so be it.

Bought it at a massive discount (under $2) and I still requested a refund. Played for forty minutes, and everything about it feels bad.

Wonderful game, and the worst part is that I can't really get into why. What I can say, however, is that the environments were nice and the story was the best I've come across in a long time, an honor previously held by Cat in the Box.

I'm absolutely in love with this game. In addition to incredibly tight writing, it's full of little easter eggs and side paths that fully expand what's presented in the narrative. A narrative which isn't immediately apparent; the vagueness makes it all the more enticing.

There's a lot to like about The Surge. The artistic direction feels very fresh, and overall it feels very alive for a dystopian post-apocalyptic hellscape. The world is equally interesting, with enjoyable level design in most areas, and though the storytelling isn't top-notch, it's also enjoyable. Your armor pieces and weapons both are incredibly stylish, and actually using them feels good. Combat is fast-paced and brutal.

In fact, too brutal.

The Surge takes a somewhat opposite approach from other Souls-likes in that it isn't all about the bosses. They're somewhat rare (and admittedly poorly designed), with most of your time spent fighting smaller enemies. This isn't a bad idea in and of itself—many of the enemies are intelligently designed and, on the surface, aren't something you can simply hack away at. But base damage is too high across the board: you, your enemies, the bosses, environmental damage—it's all too high. From the beginning of the second area, nearly every enemy stands a very real chance of killing you regardless of how far you've progressed. Old areas are only slightly less dangerous as they were during your first trip, and any sense of advancement you gain from new implants and upgraded equipment is Pyrrhic at best. That many enemies have the potential to instantly kill you regardless of your gear (or how long ago you completed the area) means balance favors maximum health, raw damage, and as many healing injectables as you have room for over any attempt at intelligent and flavorful builds (which is a shame, given how interesting many of the game's implants are).

The end result is exhaustively frustrating level progression, coupled with advancement and itemization best described as illusory. If Sisyphus always intrigued you, this game might prove enjoyable. Otherwise it's an exercise in frustration and futility that's best experienced through a Let's Play.
