This is a reasonably faithful port of the original DOS game. I appreciate the approach to only subtly improve the graphics as to not ruin the Classic Charm of Crystal Caves. The increased frame rate is a welcome addition and the game is still fun to play. However, this version isn't without its gripes...

The pixel scaling is hot garbage. Running in full screen results in uneven, distorted graphics that I would expect from a slap-dash Switch port of an indie title. Another user has pointed out that you can fix this by using launch commands to scale the resolution to a multiple of 1600x1200 at the cost of making a couple of visual features disappear. (critically, the green border that appears when you've gathered every crystal) Either that or go windowed.

Another point of contention (pointed out by many) is the tone-deaf decision to give this MS-DOS game an NES-style chiptune soundtrack. Not exactly faithful to the experience. I'm fairly certain the main audience for this game is people who grew up playing old computer games. Something in the vein of AdLib would be better.

Despite these two nagging issues I would still recommend playing this game, especially if you're into the bygone days of shareware. I'm only being hard on it because I'm an old man who grew up playing Crystal Caves and other greats from Apogee. (P.S. WHEN ARE WE GETTING RAPTOR 2???)

Donkey Kong Country is truly perfect. If you do not get this amazing new generation of Donkey Kong madness, you are STUPID! Yes I know, that's insulting, but it's also the truth.
