Basic asf...but charming and if the SCP universe is something you love then this is a nice little time sink you can share with friends but there's no story or lore involved, it's basic fps/horror survival stay alive kinda gameplay that is dated, but fun.

Let's set the scene, you're 7 years old, you're sat in front of your 15" old school box television, with your PlayStation 1 loading up, you've got Soul Reaver, Tomb Raider, Medieval 2, DarkStone, Dark Cloud...you get the jist, you're sat on your floor, pillows around you, juice and sweets near by and nothing to do all day but game, welcome back.

Valheim is the game we wanted twenty five years ago, to be able to go into a world, explore, defeats monsters, and beat difficult bosses, but be able to build your own town, farm, keep animals, create your own weapons and tools, SAIL! All of this is borderline Alpha stage content by today's standards, but back then, as that little kid that would be the "if only" stuff.

If you're around 30 or older, the above will appeal to you a lot more than modern players as we know what it was like to have PlayStation graphics be the "high definition" standard of the time and the limited albeit amazing few things games would be able to do, Valheim is the modern game of the old PlayStation era, if those old art and graphic styles are something you absolutely love, or maybe just want a run through memory lane, then this game will be enough for you. I can't quite describe the feeling of nostalgia I had while never having played the title beforehand, my first experience gave me.

The art style is beautiful, if dated "purposefully" and will not appeal to some, but the features the game includes can rival that of any Survival/RPG title that boasts premium branding.

The Base Building - You start off basic as in most games, gather wood, build tool, build hut etc, but there are no building presets, it's completely free placement and of course the style of walls etc is "viking" so if you've been binge watching your favourite movies and have an eye for putting walls together, you can build either a basic 4x4 house, or the great viking halls of old Norse cultures. There is physics in the game, build too high and the supports will break, build without supports at all and the whole building will break, buildings will erode with time but you are able to repair everything you build.

Combat - Basic hack and slash, with dash rolls, blocking and archery. Various weapons attribute for various combat styles, there is the typical Sword and Board, you can go full Leonidas and rock the Spear and Shield, or go ham and rock the Big Two Handed Mauls and just smash the world apart.

Crafting - There are a verity of different stations you can use to craft tools, weapons, food, potions, it's simple if a bit grindy, but then nothing comes easy or instantly in the good games do they.

Farming/Food - There is a farming function in the game, the good used can create powerful meals and buffs.

Multiplayer........possibly the best thing about this game is that you don't have to be alone in your big viking village you've spent weeks creating, you can have your friends or anyone online come and either just check out the world you've made your own...or join you and create a living community...again something we craved and thought impossible back in the day.

All in all...I suck at writing meaningful reviews, all of the above you could have gotten from the trailer alone but the game is truly one you have to try if survival/base building/RPG style gaming is your thing and you enjoy old style game art.

From someone who has played the original tabletop game for two thirds of his life...I have to say I never would have imagined being able to see and control the units I build and paint come to life and battle with them on THE actual Old World Map...let alone a sand-box battlefield.

The game is 99% perfect for me, Balancing is always an issue but the game receives constant updates and fixes here and there to combat that, new (albeit old) characters and factions get added to increase the roster and play styles of those already there. The Story alone is brilliant, learning the lore and playing out themed events from the tabletop (if that's your thing).

the 1% of imperfection...the siege battles, I'm not sure why, maybe an engine thing, but the siege battles are a glorified hold the forward facing wall kind of deal, you get a minuscule portion of the settlement/town/city to defend, it's pretty poor in retrospect to older titles, BUT, the detail they have to the backdrop and surrounding areas is so vast and detailed it may just be an engine limit, I haven't looked into it but I feel this will be improved on in the upcoming title.

All in all...nearly 900 hours and I will not stop until the final title is released, Truly...one of THE best games of it's kind I have played to date and by far THE single best RTS Warhammer title to be spat out of the ever slobbering maw of Games Workshop.

Play it...

*****FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BOUGHT IT YET, THE GAMEPLAY THEY SHOW IN THE CURRENT TRAILERS IS FROM THE "NEW" ALPHA TESTING VERSION...that nobody plays because everyone who enjoys this piece of trash plays the old version WHICH IS GOD AWFUL*****

...Still ♥♥♥♥

After 400 hours on this game...I can honestly say it's crap but fun.

I'm not going to do pros and cons because what is a pro for me could very well be a con for you and likewise, so i'm just going to give my thoughts on it.

The game is an amazing time-sink...if you have friends who also play it, while surviving in the game can be done Solo as well as co-op, you're probably going to only get so many kicks doing it solo before you get sick of constantly being killed while growing your dino.

Apart from some select servers that you have to sign up to and earn points with to start with an instantly fully grown dino, you do have to grow it yourself...again fun if you're not playing alone but boring as all ♥♥♥♥ if solo, especially if you're wanting to be the big bad on your server. Growth of a dino can range from an hour up to 8 hours give or take and in that time you are vulnerable to almost everyone.

The graphics for the dinos are good...for the time it was released although other games of the like still pale, the game mechanics are pretty standard...left click and right click to attack, E to eat and drink etc...

The Party system is crap, you can only truly party with your own species having to rely on common sense to not kill allies of others, all you get is a name plate on top of your allies head and a party chat (the party chat is great but when you speak in this game via chat boxes, no matter the box, your dino will be heard vocally by anyone in the surrounding area) it's basic and unfinished.

The game is just dinos, not a big selection either and all pretty much the same with different skins, you will almost never play herbivore because people lack the common sense to group properly or fight off carnivores...so that just leaves carnivores, too many of them in one group you all start to starve. You will only go a certain selection of dinos because of stats min-maxing, it's just how it is.

The devs teased and continuously said there would be Humans in the game...there is still a grey'd out selection for them in the character creation (character creation is old and basic) and to this day have not been implemented.

POSSIBLE FUTURE

The new version they are developing which took them years and will probably take them another decade to remotely finish is much better, lacking dinos but expected this early in development, I would say if you are looking to play a decent dino survival sim...play the Evrima version of this game, otherwise...just don't play it.

Shy of 30 hours of play and to be honest...I probably won't accumulate more even though it is a good game.

The game itself is fun, if you've played planetbase then this will be very familiar to you, it's a simple resource management city builder sim with mild threat and minimal combat.

I wish i watched more reviews of this game to realise that the combat is almost non-existent, you get raided after the third advance and it's just an ever increasing wave of raiders each time. you don't actively build warriors nor do you rarely leave your settlement. If you're looking for a game like AoE...this isn't it!

It's not my type of game to play personally, i prefer a more hands on approach to attack and defence but for the time I played, I enjoyed it.

Lastly...the Devs have pretty much stopped any future content for this game as well so once you've completed what is there, that's it.

**********...Looks like it's getting abandoned...**********

The following review was before it became stale...only hope is the devs pull their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fingers out.

Was going to sink 300 hours before writing a review...but I feel that is not needed.

For a game in Pre-Alpha, I have personally never played nor watched any game in the same, closed alpha, open beta...even finished states run like Last Oasis! The control response is seamless, the physics of the world mean your character has weight to it and you notice this as you move or take actions, the more weight you accumulate, the more the controls show it.

Walkers......I mean, every survival game tries a gimmick, most end up falling back onto tried and tested successes and then die in the generic bin of "another survival game". Last Oasis got it right! what do we want once we have built a nice little base, got some stations and containers and a good little set up? well...to take it with us of course!! The walkers are possibly the most revolutionary concept in survival Game history and I never want to be in a game where there is not one (except Subnautica...but that is a different experience).

The scale of each walker is amazing, from the starter ones to the very end game...you can feel the improvement every time you upgrade to the next tier, you also learn to appreciate the earlier walkers as you climb the ladder for their own specific qualities and continued relevance throughout your expansion into the wastes. The experience of building, customizing, piloting and being a passenger, a walker is, at least today, unmatched and if nothing else...play to experience that!

I'm not great at leaving reviews...there's no point in writing out everything good about it when you can watch a video showing you it...but I suggest doing neither and fully experiencing it for yourself!! I was sceptical at first, I bought the game on a whim...and it's the best "I can refund if I don't like it" decisions I ever made and didn't follow through with, because this game is now the obsession!

Where to begin...well...

My computer is roughly 7 years old and is barely able to run the game, so I have to wait now and then to load each biome which doesn't bother me because the game itself is absolutely beautiful, it's calming with its ambiance, lighting, background music and abundance of colour and life (...i say calming, this is in the shallows ofc!!)

The building experience is, at least in my experience the smoothest and cleanest of all games of its genre, I love that you have to learn each recipe and that you HAVE to explore to unlock all the features to reach what is current end game!

Every zone offers something different, there are no two zones identically formed, something my current system hates but that is moot. Each zone offers new creatures, a completely unique ambiance and feeling, the deeper you go the more beautiful the biome but also the more dangerous, a progression i find user friendly as it starts you off with basic predators, preparing you for what lies beneath the depths (this again is a lie as I’ve jamp out my skin with the odd Reaper Lev casually dragging me to the bottom near the shallows!!)

The storyline draws you in immediately!!!! it begs for a multiplayer (if but co-op) experience which i sincerely hope sometime in the future as this amazing game is sure to continue progressing will be implemented!

I have yet to even scratch the surface of the end-game as the furthest i got was the Grand Reef Biome before the last major content update but, I can honestly say, especially with the new HUD's and tweaks, I'm looking forward to completing a game that is amazing in its current unfinished form!

Thank You.
