Metro 2033 isn't a game that does anything new, but it is a game that does everything well. It's a good mashup of some different genres. In some parts it's a first person, stealth/action shooter depending on your playstyle. In other parts it's a horror/survival game. Both aspects are generally well done, however throughout the game I found it slightly disappointing how limited it was by being very linear. Metro is a hallway shooter that tries as hard a possible to hide that fact, by giving the player a good story, satisfying shooting and graphically impressive hallways to explore. If you are looking for an immersive, linear horror-shooter, metro is an excellent choice.

To other Linux users, Metro is a shining example of what a Linux port can be. The game looks and performs exceptionally, I'd go as far as to say that this is technically the best Linux game I have played so far. I played the game on a mediocre laptop with an nvidia optimus 640M GPU, using the latest version of Arch Linux with the launch options:
blank_mode=0 primusrun %command%

PS: When you get the flamethrower, don't leave it behind or you will be stuck fighting nightmare inducing monsters with throwing knives instead of instantly burning them to a crisp.

TLDR:

Pros: Good spooky FPS, Immersive game world, runs well on linux

Cons: Very linear, a bit clunky, annoying cutscenes sometimes, kind of short, low replay value

The story, characters, art style and music in Grim Fandango are great... the gameplay not so much. No amount of remastering can change that this game is still an old point-and-click with ridiculous puzzles at times. Already in the first section of the game, at the pneumatic tubing room, I looked up a spoiler-free walkthrough and used it to play through the game whenever I got stuck for too long. It's pretty much a necessity, since it would take an insane amount of trial and error to get trough the story without help.

I should also mention that at one point, I triggered a game breaking bug (Chiparos lamp + clicking inventory = freeze and crash) and I was clumsy enough to save during the bug, so I broke my save file and had to do some searching through the steam forums to get another one. It's annoying that the remastered version still doesn't have all bugs ironed out.

It's unusual for a game, but in this case, I'd say that everything else about it is better than the gameplay and it's still enjoyable despite its flaws. I'd reccomend picking this up on sale, if the story, artstyle and characters pique your interest.

Mortal Kombat is a satisfying, brutal fighting game with a cheesy, but entertaining story mode that gives some background on the characters. The graphics are good, the controls feel snappy. Multiplayer is dead, sadly, so I didn't get a chance to try it, but I still thought the game was worth it. (Just a heads up: The bossfight at the end is a b-itch to beat, I had to practice an entire day to get it)

The game worked almost perfectly on Linux for me on wine with playonlinux, after some tweaking:

-Make sure you have a working steam installation on playonlinux
-Install the game with steam
-Open playonlinux, go to configure, add the install the components
vcrun2008
and
d3dx9_36
-Make sure you are running wine in windows 7 version
-open
$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/$USERNAME/Application Data/MKKE/options.ini
(where $WINEPREFIX is the name of your wineprefix containing steam and your mortal kombat install)
-Configure this config file to the options you want, however, you must set the line
configured = true
and set
maxtexture = xxxx
where xxxx is the amount of vram that your gpu has, for example 1024, 2048 etc.
-Make the file read-only with this terminal command:
# chmod a-x options.ini

If you follow these instructions, you should be able to get the game working. The only thing that didn't work was my controller which spazzed out in the menu, if I had it connected, but I actually prefer the keyboard controls anyway.

Excellent, semi-realistic military shooter game, more than worth the price.

- Team based PvP multiplayer game modes that involve completing objectives. The main mode is similar to battlefield's conquest, with a twist: you only respawn if someone on your team captures an objective. It's intense, when you're the last man standing.
- Coop-mode where you play together against an army of bots
- large maps with day and night versions
- Satisfying gunplay: the sound is great, the guns have recoil
- Explosives sound great, this game has the most satisfying RPG to shoot out of all fps games I've played
- Varied classes with different equipment, strengths and weaknesses
- No unnecessary bloated features or tacky skins, the game feels serious and pure, although it can be modded with steam workshop content
- Runs perfectly on Linux

Insurgency hits a sweet spot between Cod and Arma.

CS2 is the same snappy competitive multiplayer FPS that CS has always been with better graphics. There are some game modes missing from CSGO and I see how that could bother some players, but competitive mode has always been the main part of the game and that is better than ever. New content will be added over time, no doubt, hopefully also improved casual modes with improved maps. Most complaints about the game are about bad teammates, but you can't fix people. What you can do is use the 'mute' button and play your own game, or play with friends which makes the game a lot more enjoyable.
