Tailor made to satisfy my ADHD perfectionism, what makes me never finish most games (redoing sections over and over until they're done flawlessly before moving onto the next part, preferring to play games in short bursts and constantly putting off games that will require large chunks of time from me) is the primary gameplay loop here. I've been waiting my whole life for a game to grip me like this. Just wish the plot wasn't the most emo cringe faniction.net storyline ever written, but what can you do? At least I've gotten some laughs out of it.

About all you could ask for in an indie FPS. Fast paced rounds that make you say "one more game", a fun art-style, rewarding/skillful gunplay, and probably the best gimmick to hit FPS in years. I say "gimmick" lightly, bcuz unlike a lot of recent FPS games with a short lived time in the sun (Quantum League, Battalion) this has real depth beyond looking cool for a trailer. You'll consistently find new strategies and synergies in the cards you bring to each match. The cards are game changing but hardly ever feel unfair, most matches are close and I always think "I could've won if I had just done [x] slightly better" afterwards. After a bit over month the game has stabilized around 400 to 600 players peak (the higher numbers on weekends), which is a healthy regular player base for a 1v1 & 2v2 game with room to grow.

My one main criticism is the progression. This game takes a lot from deckbuilders, and unfortunately that includes opening random packs to get new cards. If the packs just contained card upgrades that would be fine, but opening dozens of packs in a row and getting no new cards is extremely frustrating. Luck is not an enjoyable form of progression, true with physical TCGs and it's still true here. I wish there was simply a level up progression path to getting new cards. It's not P2W in any way thankfully (there are no microtransactions in the game), just annoying.

That one flaw aside, this is an excellent game with a bright future. Don't miss out.

The multiplayer that came with the game is dead. Was promised that a community patch could get it working again but it was a buggy mess. Maybe you could get it to work with a couple hours of effort but it's not worth that to me.

Early Access Review
MacOS build is a bit unstable but support responds quickly to help solve potential issues. Given the amount of fun this game provides, crossplay with Windows, and that it can run on a literal potato, I definitely recommend this game to Mac users who are looking for a shooter to play.

As someone who has been looking for a simplified 4X game, Polytopia is a dream come true.

It takes the formula that makes games like Civilization so amazing to the absolute barebones, and as such is recommendable to literally anybody of any skill level. The singleplayer is a great timekiller (calling back to the game's origins on mobile) and the endlessly replayable multiplayer is just as fun 1v1 as it is in an 8 person free for all.

No long tutorial or gruelingly long sessions required; Just pick it up and have a great time.

note: I am only reviewing the Multiplayer portion of the game

Amazingly fun and unique game if you can get some friends to play with you.

The whole point of playing this game over other RTS games is the FPS "gimmick", which is actually really well integrated and making good use of it will win or lose you the match. You'll probably want to play in Executron mode where some players are exclusively on the battlefield fighting for you, as this makes matches stall a lot less and takes some pressure off the main player. The RTS mechanics are really engaging too though, as trying to balance your large tree of researches, production of iron, and time fighting alongside your troops in first person keeps the match dynamic. The mechanics aren't all the most polished, but there's a ton of unique mechanics to engage with here that can keep you invested for hours.

My biggest criticism is that the netcode when you have 4 Players in RTS mode is pretty spotty (I've experienced lots of freezing for extended periods with this enabled) but the Executron mode is the most fun part of the game anyway so it really doesn't affect much. All in all though, this is a very fun game that will satisfy a large array of players. Get three other friends and have a great time executing each other.

In contention for my favorite game of all time. Played it and it's DLC countless times back on the Xbox 360, and it hasn't diminished in quality a single bit since. Absolutely recommended, and it's a no brainer when the Definitive Edition is on sale for >$10.

The Shovel Knight of 2.5D FPS games - All the excellent style, speed, and challenge you remember from those games while being completely free from the stringent limitations of mid-90's hardware. Taking the game design lessons learned in the past 25 years to heart, 'Warlock' sounds magnificent, is customizable to a tee, and and has a much better sense of progression/level design than any of those old games. It's a revisionist's view of the genre sure, but so is Brutal Doom and that's far and away the best variant of Doom ever conceived, so I'm happy to take revisionism in spades here when it makes a gaming experience this user friendly.
