Early Access Review
Wreckfest 2

Unfortunately, almost a year has passed since the early access release, and I think it is safe to say that this is a stillborn project.

The first part, as the spiritual successor to FlatOut, in my opinion did an excellent job and even managed to develop some of its predecessor’s ideas in the “crash racing” genre.
In the first Wreckfest, I was more than satisfied with the car selection, the amount of content for those who enjoy single-player, and the incredible battles (shout out to the FreakFest servers) in multiplayer.
I also want to specifically highlight the music in the game. I even added many tracks to my Spotify playlist as they perfectly complement the game’s atmosphere.

Optimization, car and map selection, and the overall visuals were all user-friendly and well-functioning, the complete opposite of the second part.
It seems to me that the developers were counting on people supporting the game financially in early access, so they could continue development with that funding. Unfortunately, interest was very limited, and now it is safe to say that with such an online player base, the game will develop very slowly, and it is not even certain if it is needed at all.

It is hard to say how many more years the developers would need at this pace to flesh out the game with content, but it seems to me that releasing such an early access version, which was essentially a build of the game they tried to sell, was a huge mistake. I do not think people will return to the game even if it is fully completed.

Battlefield™ 6

The king is dead, long live the king… oh wait, this one is a corpse too.

After Call of Duty turned into an outright content conveyor belt, it was only a matter of time before the quality inevitably degraded. At a certain point, even the fans themselves grew unhappy with what was happening. And then the legendary Vince Zampella, may he rest in peace, stepped onto the stage, promising to make the Battlefield series great again.

It is worth mentioning that Battlefield had also been stagnating. After the lackluster fifth installment, it released the even more controversial 2042, and it genuinely felt like the series had hit a dead end and perhaps even exhausted itself completely. The last part that, in my opinion, was truly successful and genuinely good, and probably my favorite, was the one set during World War I, Battlefield 1.

In modern times, it is no longer interesting or impressive that you can destroy a building. That amazed people back in 2011 or 2013, but not in 2025. Or so we thought until the release of the sixth installment.

The launch itself was grand. It set a record for concurrent players on Steam, introduced an innovative mechanic that allows you to drag a downed teammate to safety before reviving them instead of reviving them on the spot just so enemies can gun them down again for free points, and delivered solid optimization. Although, in the end, that optimization was likely achieved due to a lack of graphical innovation, which is almost nonsensical for DICE, since they were always known for breathtaking visuals. Still, if you want a mass audience, system requirements need to be reasonable, and this decision turned out to be more successful than not.

The problem is that the game did not die just because of a dark horse like the incredible Arc Raiders, which gradually pulled part of the player base away by offering a more unique setting, a deeper meta, and fresher experiences. The real issue is that Battlefield, as a live service game, simply does not work well by design.

You cannot flood it with skins because it relies heavily on realism. The main source of revenue was never really battle passes, as is common nowadays, but new maps, which are barely being added at all. Overall, post launch support was very slow, and I would even call it lazy.

I would say the story of Battlefield 6 ended just as sadly and bleakly as the story of its creator, Vince Zampella. A brand new Ferrari that had not even officially launched yet flew off the road at enormous speed and lost control. To be honest, I no longer believe in a revival of this installment through new content.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

As is often the case nowadays with numerous remasters of old games, I’ll probably state a somewhat overused but still very relevant thought about this product. Unfortunately, I can’t really judge how playable the game is in solo (I suspect it’s a bit better), but in multiplayer it’s an absolute nightmare.

The four of us suffered a lot. First of all, if one person disconnects, the entire lobby crashes (reconnect? yeah, right). What’s worse is that in such cases saving simply doesn’t work — only in-game checkpoints do. That means if you enter a level, the level itself is saved, but everything you’ve actually done inside it is lost.

This issue wouldn’t be nearly as critical if the game were stable, but that’s clearly not the case. Over a full playthrough, we had around 50(!) restarts for all kinds of reasons: crashes, level bugs, items falling through textures, and plenty of other “fun” awaiting anyone who dares to try this masterpiece in co-op.

The gameplay itself is based on item hunting, and there is a certain charm to that. For the modern audience that craves fast dopamine hits it may feel slow and tedious, but for those who enjoy touching old games, it’s… fine. There’s no real “wow” factor though, even by the standards of older games.

Overall, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I’m absolutely in favor of seeing more remasters of classic games. On the other hand, in this state, they are hardly necessary at all.

It is worth starting with the fact that people have been missing interactive cinema in games. Telltale games have not released anything for a long time, and among major interactive game publishers, Quantic Dreams does not make anything either. Only Supermassive Games has released something, but the quality is debatable.

This game turned out to be for everyone. It is well structured and well written, has its own style, and the freedom of choice is not completely illusory, as often happens in games of this kind. The most obvious drawback is probably just the short length of the story.

I tried the game after the whole internet was buzzing and praising it, and honestly, that slightly raised my expectations. Were they met? Partially.

Gameplay-wise it is like This Is Police, which I actually enjoy, but in a superhero setting. You need to correctly assess the situation based on the information about the call you received and send the right combination of heroes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3609039806
The game, following the classic conventions of the genre, tries to manipulate the player to confuse and surprise, but I must say the story is still predictable, probably affected by the overall length. In my opinion, the game is far from the depth of Invincible, which addresses more serious themes. This is more like a teenage superhero movie with some adult elements.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3609826419
After finishing it, I liked what I saw, but I was not strongly impressed. The story is decent but not outstanding. However, it seems to me that the way the game has been embraced by players shows that this niche of interactive cinema is unfairly ignored by many studios today.

Hades II

After the announcement of the second part, I was skeptical. The studio had never made sequels before, and when something is created as a follow up because of financial success, it usually ends up being an average idea with lots of fan service.

I was glad to be wrong, and now I believe that the second part is not only no worse than the first, but it is hard for me to even say what exactly I missed or what could have been improved. Maybe a bit more drama in the ending could have been interesting, but that is a matter of personal taste.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3579464049
The mechanics became deeper, there are more of them now, including a greater variety of locations, bosses, enemies, trials, and companions. The game became bigger and higher quality, which is what you expect from a sequel, and at the same time it has its own style and vibe. Personally, I have nothing to criticize the game for.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3605563038
Some people might be put off by the fact that completing the main story requires more than fifty hours, and finishing all side quests and trials takes over one hundred. But in this sense it is only slightly larger than the first part, and this feels more like its specific feature than a drawback, especially because the gameplay is very addictive. When you get into it, you want to do one more run, and then another, and another, just like in the first game.

The story structure remains similar to the first part. The plot is built around the family of the main heroine and the special nature of relationships between gods and other beings of the underworld.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3580144772
You can say that the game became a bit harder than the first part and at the same time a bit easier. The meta progression offers more build options, and I would especially like to mention potion brewing, which feels very enjoyable.

It is a pity that this year Hades Two is unlikely to win the Best Indie Game award, although in my opinion it definitely deserves it and is absolutely a strong contender for the title.

Absolum

In my humble opinion, this is one of the best indie debuts of the year.
Absolum is a beat em up roguelike, not the most mind-blowing genre combination, but the game turned out excellent in the end.

The cartoonish art style does a lot to enhance the storytelling. The story itself may seem simple (and it is simple), but the game draws you in not with its plot, but with the way it presents it through the environment and gameplay situations.

Aside from the main mission, the game offers a solid number of side quests that are important for metaprogression, as is the case with nearly every roguelike these days. There are also branching paths, and unfortunately, you can’t complete every side quest in a single run, even with perfect play.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3600825326
There are four playable characters with different playstyles, each having six unique arcana (abilities). Before each run you get to choose one of them, and of course, building fun and crazy builds, as every good roguelike allows, is also part of the experience. One of the strongest builds I had was based on throwable items, coins. Enemies had absolutely no chance, especially since there is a cheat code for infinite money.

I enjoyed almost everything, though I do have questions about the endgame content. To unlock the true ending, the developers in my opinion went a bit overboard with stretching out the process. You will need quite a few runs even with fully maxed out metaprogression. At that point the game becomes significantly harder, but I suppose that is perfect for players who felt the main part of the game was too easy, because it really is not very difficult.

С.A.S.T.

You’re looking at an indie 4 player cooperative extraction horror shooter with progression and crafting — a combination that immediately caught my attention.
I won’t go into the art style or the title; that’s a matter of taste. But I will say this: despite having five maps, fifteen difficulty levels, various crafting options and skills, as well as different missions and objectives, the game’s meta is quite shallow. You jump in, shoot things, complete a mission, and leave.

It can entertain you for one or two evenings, but there’s really nothing to do beyond grinding. The missions aren’t interesting, the level design isn’t either, and apart from shooting at AI dummies with different weapons, the game has very little to offer the player.

RV There Yet?

R V turned out to be quite a controversial game overall, especially at launch.
Many people like to compare it to PEAK, but “PEAK in a camper van” isn’t entirely accurate.

On the contrary, the game actually offers more interesting mechanics than its “spiritual predecessor”, but not a very large space in which to fully realize them. You get a large scripted map — no prerendered runs each attempt — with developer-crafted scenarios that make you sweat and genuinely challenge you. At the same time, the game is divided into 15 zones, each starting with a checkpoint you can load from and retry (something PEAK doesn’t have, though that game’s runs are much shorter).

The game is designed so that you won’t beat it on your first try, but the punishment for mistakes isn’t too harsh thanks to the frequent checkpoints.
However, it also doesn’t really offer replayability — once you’ve completed it, that’s basically it.

The developers managed to make the game unique and fun in its own way, but I think the release version had too many bugs, and in that state it probably shouldn’t have been launched yet.

There are also many situations where you objectively don’t need four players, and two are more than enough for a comfortable playthrough — which leads to situations where the rest can simply AFK and watch.

Overall, the concept feels fresh and fun, but the execution is a bit lacking. It’s a good attempt at another hit, but not as successful for the reasons mentioned above.

Little Nightmares III

In my opinion, Little Nightmares 3 does not deserve as much negativity as it has been getting. (I should say that I am not a hardcore fan of the series, though I do find it very appealing.)
I think moving toward a co-op experience was a natural step, since the idea had already started to take shape back in the second game, so that is definitely a plus for this one.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3586465348
In my view, the game also managed to preserve its signature visual style (although I have read that many players did not like the level design or the bosses, I can only partially agree with that criticism).
I have also seen people mention that the game is buggy. I personally did not encounter a single bug during my playthrough, but of course that is a subjective experience. I assume the bugs do exist, but I can only judge based on what I have seen myself.
However, I think the negativity comes from a combination of factors, including:
Supermassive Games currently has a mixed reputation after the uneven The Dark Pictures series, which led to skepticism even before Little Nightmares 3 was released.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3584204356
The game’s price went up. It started as an indie project, but as the brand grew, the publishers raised the price accordingly. Unfortunately, aside from the co-op element, the game did not manage to offer much more (some even say it made certain aspects worse than in previous entries) and certainly did not surprise players.
There is also Reanimal, a similar game made by former developers of the series, whose demo was released around the same time. Many people liked it more, making comparisons inevitable.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3585606447
In the end, Little Nightmares 3 is a decent co-op experience with the series’ recognizable style. However, beyond the co-op addition, it fundamentally fails to bring anything truly new or exciting. It is not a bad game by any means, but fan expectations played a cruel trick on it, and I think it will inevitably go down as a failure in the eyes of many.

ARC Raiders

During the first open beta, the game, which few people expected much from, especially right from the start, immediately caught my attention with its unusual style for an extraction shooter. What surprised me the most was that even at the beta stage it was already well polished in terms of optimization (I think it is the first time I have seen that) and featured smooth and satisfying movement.

The 120 to 150 thousand concurrent players during the first open beta showed that there was genuine interest in the game. Still, I was worried that by launch, problems might surface, the hype would fade for various reasons, and the game would quickly go from promising to dead.

However, that did not happen, and now the game has broken its own record with 350 thousand concurrent players on Steam (not even counting consoles) and rightfully took the number one spot in Steam sales this week, surpassing the excellent Battlefield.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3596229896
I have to say, I like almost everything about it. It is fun to search for, find, and loot various items, to learn what they are for. The time to kill feels good, the level design and extraction routes are interesting, and the PVE elements, like the drones that are well made with clear roles, strengths, and weaknesses, are engaging. Overall, it is a game I just want to praise.

As for downsides, I would probably mention the third person view. In games like this, players will inevitably abuse it, which they do here, but at the same time third person brings its own unique gameplay experience and sense of character. So even this mechanic is debatable, not entirely bad, just not for everyone.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3596243680
In any case, I am glad that after The Finals, which was also interesting but had its quirks, the studio decided to make something very different and earned their success. I just hope they have a solid long term support plan so the game can keep delighting everyone who enjoys it.
