it's a fine game, but i had to personally put it down.

every 3 minutes, something happens. dave gets back from his dive? 3 people talk to him. open the bar? 10 people. discover something new? 5 side quests. none of it is particularly enticing to me - it feels like the devs had ideas they kept piling up, no one ever really told them no, so they put every single thing they could in this game.

i'd still recommend it - i think the gameplay loop is more than fine - but i found the game very exhausting. it's built like a mobile game, constantly throwing something your way to grab your attention instead of letting its strengths shine.

visually, this is some of supergiant's best work, if not their best. mechanically, it is also interesting enough to keep you playing, too

mechanically, it's also decently fun to play. the team building mechanic (picking your 3 players) adds a bit of flavor to the... whatever sport? we're kinda playing but honestly it all holds together pretty well and is a little gem of a game to play.

this game rules, my favorite of the original games. i am a wacky workbench apologist and i am not afraid to say it. also every addition this version makes is good, especially picking the soundtrack you want

shame u cant buy this version anymore...

on steam deck : using the menus seems very awful, as your actual mouse position seems to desync from the actual game, making menuing a real pain

other than that the gameplay is fine, definitely on the better side of "play shmup while your tunes play" kind of game

i dunno about all the extra NES stuff that's missing and all but between the updated visuals, soundtrack, and a lot of massive gamechangers like the MAP!!! this is the best way to play FF1

after thinking about it after beating the game, i thought for a moment : do i care about this game? no. nothing about the game made me want to care for it.

enemies are fairly boring, bosses weren't particularly enticing to fight, and puzzles are all some sort of variation of : hit timed switch.

the game looks very pretty and handles more than fine, but i have no incentive to care about much, if any, of it. it's "fine", which is its best asset, but also means the game was mostly unremarkable. at the very least, it does not drag on.

the usage of the sun meter is somewhat good though, forcing you to consider whether you want your meter for healing, or damage. the genre usually dictates "spend meter for spell", but imp of the sun goes the extra distance and puts you in an empowered state. unfortunately, offset by the fact that killing enemies refills the gauge, so it doesnt feel very risk-reward.

(steam achievements also seem broken as of writing this review)

this game is a lot of fun! it has some jank because they adjusted it from its online gacha model, but it still plays well and is an enjoyable thing to play through. bonus : you can keep grinding events to max everything as you wish, and there's challenge modes that you can play through after you're done with the main "core" of the game
