Simply Epic. Much different from Minecraft, in that it isn't really about building (even though you have more options, due to more blocks/variants plus the ability to color those. it comes, however, with the restriction of 2D [of course]. so your buildings might not seem to you as impressive as those in mc). therefore, it has a big focus on adventure, exploration, advanced crafting (e.g. for really strong items, which are crafted successively by putting together two or more items, resulting in one that combines their advantages and can again be used as an ingredient - thus you get really long "chains" of crafting, to get to one epic item or weapon in the end.
if you don't like spending tons of time exploring/gathering, you'll probably have a hard time getting to some badass (and often needed) items. however, the game will still pose enough diversity for impatient players, since it makes the bossfights more rewarding if you go in early and unprepared.

to say the least, it is veeery balanced (like, seriously. you rarely get such a well-balanced game, and the devs keep rebalancing things to match new content), is still a lot of fun when replayed multiple times and has tons of content.

Update: Since the release of expert mode, the AIs have gotten a lot more interesting (as has overall gameplay and enjoyability for those of us that no longer saw a challenge in the usual hardcore runs [yes, i completed a hardcore expert mode playthrough. after 19 tries.])

Because I can now nominate this game for a steam award, i was hard pressed to choose between "time tested" and "just 5 more minutes", and ended up taking the former, because the devs just pump love, effort and originality into this game like few else. This really has you coming back to it again and again, because every update is amazing, well balanced and fun to discover, and all are free!

Aaaand another update because steam nomination committee... this time, labor of love, because c'mon. Need I explain why. Also 2020 again because Journey's End
