shenmue isnt the game you first expect it to be. shenmue is, at its deepest core, a painstakingly boring life simulation roleplaying movie game. shenmue is frustrating. really, really frustrating. shenmue's basic controls are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, some of the worst tank controls in any 3d era game. shenmue's fighting mechanics are ripped straight from virtua fighter, another old game with an antiquated control scheme. shenmue has time constraints on life events that trigger only in specific places; this makes for in-game days/nights that drag for seemingly forever. shenmue has lots of intrusive sega advertising. shenmue forces you to walk around aimlessly and speak with every npc about minute details ryo learns. shenmue has a cut scene for everything. shenmue has a laughably bad english dub. but sometimes shenmue is shamelessly and ignorantly beautiful. shenmue makes you experience every individual second, moment, and experience as ryo traversing japan and china. shenmue is massive and its open world environment beckons for frequent player interaction. shenmue's real-time day-and-night cycle and size is incomparable for a game of its age. shenmue is overly-ambitious, a game that costed d3t and sega $70 million to develop and market but was innovative in pushing the boundaries of open world design.

its easy to pick on shenmue for what it is. but enjoying the game for what it does to innovate storytelling and immerse players is incredible. if you can get past its corny, over-the-top delivery and growing age, shenmue provides a charming and sincere experience. everything in the game is done with intention and the love, care, and dedication is seen in every little detail.
