More of a neutral review than a negative one but god forbid nuance on the internet.

A lot of things about this game are really good, such as the soundtrack, vocal performances, and how it is one of the few games that isn’t UE5 slop. I cannot comment on the narrative since I have not finished but it is okay so far. I can understand why many people like this game and it won GOTY.

However, I cannot recommend this game in good faith if you dislike the souls-like mechanics in combat. While parrying is the main selling point of E33, it is incredibly overpowered with damage nullification, gaining action values and excess damage ON the condition you parry EVERYTHING. So to balance this, some enemies have obnoxious attack patterns and sometimes you end up parrying for 33 seconds. Coupled with hitting the 10,000 damage cap few hours in that isn’t removed until Act 3, you get an experience that is pretty boring if you don’t vibe with this mechanic. While it is not impossible to beat the game without parrying all the time, you slow down your progression in combat significantly by not doing so.

Turn-based RPGs with QTE mechanics has not been popular for a long time because it already exists in a category called ARPGs. If you love parrying or dodging , play Elden Ring instead. If you want to lean into actual teambuilding and actual turn-based combat, play Metaphor: Refantazio.
