Poorly made VR controls.
VR locomotion set on hand only. Can't change it to head. Grabs work badly and inconsistent. Most of the time it is not possible to use both hands to hold, e.g, pistol clip and a bullet to load it in.

I tried playing through Steam Remote Play Together.
For some reason quick tab menu (shift+tab) is not opening. Can't change settings to play with mouse+keyboard for my friends. They are forced to play on controler.

Extreme amount of writings. It is hard to grab and play.

Friends didn't enjoy playing on split screen either and left after the first start. Without quality of life updates I don't recommend to play it. Dear developer, solve such issues and try again.
Simplify the settings a ton.

Arcady shooter for VR-starters
Much better work than Vertigo Games did with Arizona Sunshine (and most of their games, let's be honest). Even though there are two-handed weapons you can only hold them with one hand. Reload animations are simple even if you set them on manual.
The game itself is very good for VR-testing areas and if you're new to VR.
This is mostly CoD World at War zombie game mode, where you unlock new areas and boxes with random items.
If you played more challenging games before-hand I suggest to skip it.
For VR-veterans it is certainly a refund . For VR-newcomers is a must-have title.

Hope to see some other challenging games in the future from Soul-Assembly Ltd. Guys did a really good job. But I didn't die in the hour I played it.

I played more time on Quest standalone, so my playtime on Steam is extremely low.

Currently the best VR shooter.
Yes, maybe not the best performance possible at this time. Especially after the wipe.

The game has 2 gamemodes:
Battle-Royale
and
Exfillzone
(Viva la Tarkov)
I see that the BR mode is left behind. Developers launched season 1 and ended it in 2 months not giving an opportunity to finish the Battlepass. Season two didn't happen, no progression, no battlepass. Only skins unlock system. That's because of Extraction mode that was released instead.

Devs are focused on Extraction gamemode right now. Many handy features are being added, no need to explain it here cause the list would be big. As a guy who played EFT non-stop for 2 years straight I can tell that the game took the best of it and did more. Gunsmith system and sprays — BRAVO.

But as I mentioned that BR is left behind and playerbase is pretty low. There were some minor tweaks made after September 25th.
But I still insist on
removing the REBORN
gamemode.
Let the TRIOS be permanent
or at least change each mode hourly or each week/day/month. The player base is really low and even Reborn doesn't collect the full-lobby of players anymore.

Maybe make BR free-to-play?

Supply of this game meets low demand

If you're reading this from 2018. You possibly wanted this game.
Unfotunately, Onward has lost its gimmicks. Development of other VR titles overshadowed them all.

Gunplay
To put it simply. It sucks.
Things that presist in most VR shooters:
Flashlights and lasers can be turned on/off by pressing your trigger that holds the barrel. So as in Pavlov and both Contractor$ titles.
Fire mode switch works.
Reloading is usual (press button to eject the mag, insert new one, use the bolt if needed).

Gun goes through your body and your hands, gun feels floaty
Hands also go through objects and textures.
While aiming downsights it is either you putting your hands far from headset or either you put it too close to your face where the tracking may be lost. Stock sometimes appear on your screen.
I am sure it is worse than playing with wooden stick.

Settings and controls
Settings menu is terrible. ENORMOUS menu. Move your head left and right and read what each settings does by pointing at it.
Your weapon can't be hold by simply holding the grip button as in any other game. Only press to hold/unhold.
Your other hand can be set to holding a gun by not using grip button. It can be activated by moving your hand closer to the barrel.
Why would anyone need that? I guess, VR stock users may use it. But VR stocks not needed mostly. But with a such gunplay, you may need that.

Physics? Forget about it.
Crouch only physically. No proning.

Hands
It is 2025. Floating wrists is
NOT Okay
Unless it is a gameplay feature.

How not to make games today: Say hi to Vertigo games (Arizona Sunshine, Metro Awakening)

Quality of life
It seems that the developers don't play their own game.
Feels like the work was done by deadbeat depression 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. shifters who dislike their job.
Tablet on the back of your waist. You dropped it? — Bend to get it from the floor. Why not to move it automatically to its place? Such a simple QoL feature that would make gameplay better.
Drones
The game lets you use R6 Siege type drone and quadcopter.
Both are controlled by the tablet. Settings can be adjusted on the screen (invert AXIS, switch joysticks).
Why not to let player move at the same time while droning? The game locks both of your joysticks on tablet controls. It would be better to set controls this way:
Right trigger to move on forward, left trigger to move back.
Camera controls with your dominant hand controller's joystick (right),
Left stick is for your character movement.

Summary

Want to make your friend quit VR quite quickly?
Buy Onward
I give it

Early Access Review
Better than Arizona Sunshine made by a few people.
Good starting point for new to VR users.
Good
  • Mounting scopes, muzzles is intuitive;
  • Picking stuff up;
  • Narrative, jokes;
  • Style design may remind you of XIII;
  • Stability;
  • Price.
Bad
  • No VR interactions with the world, except for hands touching doors
  • Floating wrists/gloves
  • No squats, only jumps;
  • VR Hands follow real hands slower than must be;
  • Only 2 slots for weapons;
  • Recoilness
  • I had to drop weapons to open doors instead of just pushing them with player's body.
  • AI
  • Narrative first, gameplay second (forgotten)

Overall not bad for indie studio, they got knoledge and a bit of money
There are not so many decent projects on VR market.
But there were no updates for 7 months since this review published. And even if this game was made for mouse and keyboard it would still be boring in 2024. Cause we played same stuff in 2003-2005.
I press RECOMMEND only because this was made by an indie team, for now you should skip it

Early Access Review
Definetely a refund. Just skip it. I played NMRiH 1 at Green Light. I played it recently alone and I was able to entertain myself for many hours playing original game.
Guess buying devs of original franchise is not enough for a good game. Yes, graphics look better and may need some polishing, cause some textures are keep following zombies, e.g. their brains.
+ Map design
+ Lights (may be needed some adjustments, but generally fine)
— No explanation what scrap points are needed for.
— Fighting system is awful even for early access. Sometimes you need to hit 4 times with heavy attacks, sometimes 25. But magnum will do the job, if you won't miss. But there is no impact on attacks. Like in Chivalry 2 there are no impact from the swings and pokings. It worked better even in Chivalry Medieval Warfare.
— Heavy attacks finish themselves. You can't hold it like you used to. The game makes you time it right before swing.
— Tons of pistol ammo. But no ally was able to find a single pistol in 2 weapon rooms.
— Huge lags when players are together. I could barely run.
— Zombies are not fun, they are just annoying. 180 swings are just piece of cake.
— Tasks. I played 2 games and before reaching the plant you will have these "activities"
1. Find fuse, put it in.
2. Connect the letters and numbers from one side to another so the generator will work.

Perfect example what a corporate can do for buying out the game and ruin the whole concept of survival.
