before i do anything, lemme just say that THIS IS NOT A BAD GAME, and your experience will (hopefully) differ from mine. i was extremely conflicted when i first beat this game. on one hand, i loved certain aspects of it to death. but on the other hand, i only liked "those" aspects.

this game is often considered the pinnacle of metroid-vania games, constantly being compared to others of similar nature and being put on this magical, unreachable pedestal. personally, i don't see it. i believe this game is flawed, and is definitely NOT the pinnacle of the genre. but before i shoot off my hate boner, i'm just gonna rattle off some things i did like about it. the graphics are obviously really good, and it's accompanied by a banger soundtrack. i believe that the exploration aspect of this game is mostly unmatched, but that's about it. on paper, this game is the ideal definition of a metroid-vania, huge, confusing map, an upgrade based progression system, an emphasis on exploration, yada yada. but in practice? i believe it is very flawed, and i'm gonna start with one of the things i despised the most.

COMBAT

i believe that the combat in Hollow Knight just kind of sucks? it's extremely dull, annoying, and unrewarding in my opinion. and most of this stems off the fact that EVERYTHING DEALS CONTACT DAMAGE. for how short your attacks are and how much fighting with your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ nail is emphasized, you'd think that they'd design the bosses to where this won't be annoying and unfun. unfortunately, i don't think that's what they did. this is especially apparent in the Watcher Knight fight. i can't describe to you how much i just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate this fight. it's not fun at all. it's infuriating. i believe this fight is entirely RNG. not to mention that with enemies that move so fast and can close in on you quickly, they don't have the camera fit the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arena??? if i run off and go heal at the opposite side of the arena, i have NO clue whether or not one of these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are just gonna come out of nowhere and kill me. how the hell am i supposed to react to that?? the knights are huge too, and it was really common for me to just accidently scrape them and get hit. and there's SIX OF THEM???? after eventually beating that horrible fight, i thought that at least, just maybe, i get some cool reward for that right??? (it's important to mention that when i beat the Watcher Knights, i hadn't gone and got the dream nail yet) my reward was... nothing? seriously, there is no reward other than a dreamer. after that realization, i turned the game off. no saving. i just shut it off. it's like the game rewarded my hard work by telling me to go ♥♥♥♥ myself. i'm not sugarcoating it by saying that i think the Watcher Knights are the hardest boss in the main quest. the "Hollow Knight" was actually surprisingly easy, and is no where near the levels of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ i was expecting. i hate saying that combat was such a sour point for me. for how much the tight controls and fun movement are advertised, i feel it doesn't help combat that is fundamentally flawed for me. tldr: i believe combat is unfun and annoying.

STORY

...story? what story? i don't remember a story? honestly, in a game like this, story would usually come last for me. i care much more for the exploration and combat aspects. but for how much this story is praised for being phenomenal and how this game is worth playing just for the story, i don't see it. i could honestly care less for this story, if i could even piece it together. that's why i'm not gonna waste time on it. that's not to say it's a bad story. it might not be! who knows. i just didn't really care for it. the characters are uninteresting and just straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I didn't feel bad about just leaving Zote to die. why should i save him? what's my reward? him calling me unworthy and stupid? Zote can die for all i care lmao. none of the characters were truly remarkable to me, just NPCs. not people worth talking to, just NPCs.

look i feel the need to say this again. this is not a bad game, and i completely understand why people absolutely love it to death. don't take my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ review as "this game sucks" because that's not what i meant. this game is clearly not for me, and i just wanted to get it off of my chest. for your sake, play Hollow Knight, you might really enjoy it! this game is critically appraised for a reason!

this is one of the greatest 2D action games i’ve ever played.
