It’s accurate to say this game is just Dark Souls 2D but somewhat worse on every aspect. If Dark Souls is 8/10, Salt and Sanctuary is 6/10. Still probably a good option for fans of Dark Souls and metroidvanias, but don’t expect anything revolutionary.
That’s the only real critic I can give to this game. I could write walls of text about it but that would be extremely biassed, because I played this game for the first time (pirated) during turbulent times.

I could argue about how good the upgrade system is. And how the combat isn’t that impressive and the level design is the one doing the heavy lifting. Or even complain that Lost Izalith makes the game objectively worse and should have been scraped during development.
But no. This is the REMASTERED. It was supposed to fix many problems and most important, improve the graphics. And it does not deliver it. Some places in game look WORSE than the original. OK there are some graphical improvements but a good portion of them don’t match properly with the ambience and... why do old rusted metal weapons and armours shine like they were new? This is bad, or even – dare i say it – soulless.
Unless you REALLY want the quality of life improvements and the multiplayer changes, don’t buy it. Go get the original and install DSfix.

From the beginning I wasn't expecting much, and surprisingly, it's still disappointing.
The scenarios' graphical quality and its presentation was what kept me playing. And about the horror, there are a few crumbs of it to enjoy. That moving painting on a dark hallway was the most interesting to me. But what is truly horrifying about this game are the character animations with the most inhuman facial and body expressions, breaking any glimpse of immersion this experience needed to be enjoyable.
I'm sure the developers forgot this product is a GAME and thus neglected proper mechanics. Simply walk around pressing E on corners until all clues are found (Don't bother reading any of them - I read them all and they don't have anything interesting to say). If I wanted such scavenging tasks, I have Metro 2033 on my library ready to launch. At least there, the things I find are useful. But do not worry, there are some breaks on this nightmare with stealth sequences. Are they good? No. However, it's much better than pretending to be a detective while the game tells you everything. I do not like puzzle games because I am stupid and they remind me of it. And yet, it baffles be how those puzzles underestimate my already low intelligence. I'd rather play Half-Life again, at least those puzzles were fun. "Oh so you like gun games, right?" I wonder if there is a single person on the world who thinks that "gun session" was a good thing. Not having the pistol and being forced to evade the enemies would have been objectively better, even at its current (disgraceful) state.
I deeply wish that the lantern mechanics were properly developed, I can see high potential on it, but unfortunately it is just more wandering with a "light button" to press. And that part where Sarah has to find the circles and light them... absolutely the worst.
At this point I could just say "they should have made a visual novel or a book" since it fails at being a game. Well, a visual novel would not work because it lacks even on player choices. They are very convoluted, with no clear consequences and might as well not exist at all. And a book? No. At first I thought the plot was intentionally confusing and through proper investigation I would get some answers but nah, those were just the product of bad writing. And then I realized this story and its dialogue have more holes than I can count. No one would have a reason to read such book given the option to read anything by Lovecraft. Even that one poem of his sounds like fun compared to that.
This game may present a bit of horror in a compelling manner, although nullified by its mind numbing mechanics which are the real psychological horror of the game.

Should you play this game? No. Go play "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" instead.
Yet you still considering it?
Sure, it may be worth your time. But not your money.

I deeply regret wasting my money on this game. Even TTT would have been a better investment of my time.
