Further refinement of the Borderlands 2 gameplay loop isn't enough to counteract the major shortcomings of this entry. OP levels have been replaced by Mayhem levels, Badass ranks with Guardian ranks. Explosive damage for Radiation. Really all the same mechanics with a thin veneer of fresh paint.

More milquetoast characters, amateur writing & dialogue and horribly outdated pop culture references mar this game's story. Gearbox has left the brilliant subtlety of Borderlands 1 far behind and we all suffer for it. Not to mention the hamfisted identity politics inserted for woke brownie points.

If you loved the endgame of BL2 then you'll feel right at home here, for anyone else looking for complex stories of tragedy and inhumanity look elsewhere. Though Krieg's DLC comes close to being a serviceable offering.
