Brilliant ideas marred by an awful control scheme and a positively barmy difficulty curve. I -want- to like it. but...

(...also. so much of the rich narrative is held hostage by unfair jumping puzzle design, it almost feels like the payoff - no matter what it is - can't possibly be worth the setup).

(I await the stream of hate mail this is going to earn me.)

Cons: unforgiving.
Pros: unforgiving!

You will die a lot. And you will enjoy it.

Dani, take a bow. You earned it.

(disclaimer: game was priced $0 when I got it)

Update: 1.1.1.2 still crashes with every version of Proton I've tried. No logs, no error message, no anything. Mods are not installed.

How on earth did you guys manage to earn a 'Playable' tag? Not even close.

Oh dear me, what _doesn't_ this package do? 2D? yep. 3D? yep. Mixing 2D & 3D? yep. Colour grading? yep. Compositing? yep. Motion graphics? yep. Everything that AfterEffects and Premiere do, plus a whole lot of stuff they _wish_ they could do? yep.

Why are you still reading this? Go install it!

Okay, it's a little silly and low-fi, and it doesn't deal with latency well, but ya know what? It's fun in a way that L4D isn't, and the community, small as it may be, are pretty good guys and gals.

Hard recommend.

Patch 2.3 is a significant regression in performance, rendering the game unplayable now. Thumbs down still stands.

I originally thumbed this down because they cheerfully broke it on older Xeons in a patch with 0 warning.
Still a little sour they didn't provide an alternate codepath for non-AVX machines, but what can you do?

Original review:
I don't understand the hate for this game; sure, the car AI is...interesting at times, and I've seen some 'unexplained disappearances', but it's no worse than, say, Vice CIty (which gleefully deallocates/evicts entitiies the second you stop looking at them and has NPCs do absolutely mental stuff in traffic jams). And while maybe it could be a little deeper in places (as others have opined - I don't feel like I'm far enough in yet to judge this fairly), it -feels- pretty deep, and it's satisfying to roam around in and simply observe the world. The sound work and voice acting are magnificent, and the graphics are an absolute treat for the eyes, even though I have everything turned down to 'potato' (data point: a Quadro P2000 will kind of struggle with this game).

I'm happy with it, and, quite frankly, I do hope they'll consider publishing a paper on Gamasutra sometime that explains how the shading works...

- Crashes on Alt+Tab in Windows 10, despite handling of losing and regaining focus/a DirectX context having been a solved problem for, what, a decade now?
- Unskippable cutscene, right out of the gate.

Not the first impressions you wanna lead with.

Hard yes - the syntax on the scripting language is very well-thought-out, the visual shader system is incredibly easy to work with, and my own project in here runs like a treat, even on an Atom CPU with integrated graphics, using the GLES 3 pipeline. My only gripe is having encountered some weirdness with COLLADA imports in the past (easily worked around); hopefully, this will have improved in 3.2.1.

Overall, highly recommended.

(update: I'm now about six months into a major project with this thing, and it continues to find ways to positively impress me. I haven't tried out 4.x yet - it would require too many script changes to my in-flight project - but I have high hopes. It really is a well-crafted tool.)

(forgot to mention - if you'er comfortable compiling from source, it'll happily run on ARM 64-bit, too!)

All of the good things about No Man's Sky and Harvest Moon swirled into a malt. Runs flawlessly on a midrange GPU and on Linux, too.

-Highly- recommended.
