Early Access Review
This game is coming along great so far, but I would hold off for now. Despite having a lot going for it, the game seems to have a lot of bugs. This has the makings of one of the best immersive sims I've ever played, but there are so many issues I can't recommend it yet.

For one, it seems that some cases are unsolvable -- at least using the evidence as given. I'm not sure if this is intended or not. It's not clear, for instance, if a citizen knows a crime is solvable when hiring someone for it, or even if the accused party is guilty. None of this is made clear by the game, unfortunately.

Then there are bigger problems -- I rolled a fresh city today only to find that no procedural murders happened during an entire 8 hour session of play. Not good. Over an entire in-game week passed by with the name of the game being entirely absent from the game.

Finally, since I got it a in mid-2023, ago not much has been changed or updated. It sure looks like the developer has been busy, judging from the update notes, but the pace of development is not satisfactory to me. The biggest update that's happened since I got the game was... drum roll... a single new case type and building. Thats... not terribly impressive for over 9 months worth of work. That said, they keep fixing bugs, so maybe sooner or later the ones affecting me will get hit. :)

I really can't overemphasize how disappointed I was to sit down with this game after leaving it to bake in the oven for a year only to find that the product had, in many measurable ways, grown worse over time, not better. I'm really hoping I just played a bad build, but something is telling me that the developer's marketing material has surpassed their ability to deliver on it. Originally, this review was a thumbs up, but after playing a build today that was arguably in a worse state than it was originally, I'm not so sure. If you're okay with playing a fun detective sim with the proviso that you're also okay with game breaking bugs, I'd say give it a whirl. Otherwise I'd steer clear until the developer has another year or two to work on it.

Personally, I won't be changing this back to a thumbs up until I see a marked improvement in the level of polish in this game. I was really burned this time when I sat down to play -- the game turned out to be a massive waste of my time when I found out the game basically wasn't working as advertised.

Most of my playtime is on the original release on PS4. Amazingly, this game is incredible. It only took 6+ years of development, but now Hello Games has finally delivered the game they originally promised.

It slaps.

At least until you dig a little deeper -- there are a TON of roaches hiding underneath a slick veneer of UI polish and clever marketing. There are still major quality issues with the title that the press doesn't talk about nor the wider community in general. A friend of mine and I tried to do multiplayer together, but we found the feature to be either non working (couldn't join games) or, when we were able to finally do so, it wasn't clear how we could keep together or work on missions together. The entire multiplayer feature set is so completely disjointed and poorly explained that I would hesitate to say it's even functional. Like, sure, you can claim its functional. If you're an idiot. And you might be right because Hello Games doesn't publish documentation for these features and doesn't include working tools to allow players to stay together easily. So who's to say what's working properly and what isn't?

For instance, when we would go to the Nexus, when we would leave the nexus then we would both wind up in our own respective systems, god knows where apart. We saw an option to travel to each other in the portal system, but that didn't seem to work and neither the game nor google searches was able to provide any helpful information to explain why. After a couple hours of trying to actually be in the same system together, we gave up.

Outside of multiplayer, there are problems too. Nothing in the game is explained or documented in any useful way. They are just not good at putting hooks in front of the player to show them where the content is. They just release updates, say there's a bunch of stuff in it, and then leave it at that. I doubt a lot of the features they talk about in the updates work. The reason I say this is because there is no apparent way to access them and the features that I *have* been able to access don't seem to work properly.

The game lacks polish, plain and simple. How this game is garnering positive reviews is understandable -- it looks nice and most of the features that are easily accessible work well enough to establish a sort of loop. For me, the quality issues and issues figuring out what to do ruin the experience for me. I guess people love a good comeback story, because that's all it is -- a story.

The reality does not match up with the facade the community and Hello Games puts on. This game still needs serious amounts of work shaving off rough edges and that's work that Hello Games doggedly refuses to do. It doesn't help that their community gleefully laps up any halfway functional table scraps the developer happens to shovel their way and then pretend it's gourmet cuisine. It's really bizarre. There are people going around on these steam reviews right now marking every negative review as "Funny". Like, who does that? 12 year olds?

Don't think this 'facade' exists? Look at creators on YouTube and Twitch being paid to make promotional material for the game. One of my favorite Tubers, ForceGaming, made a 20 minute video. It was paid promo, ofc, but I trusted him, so I thought I'd give the game another whirl. I was able to play for maybe 5-10 hours before I ran out of meaningful, easily accessible content and Force completely neglected to mention all the bugs, multiplayer issues and general lack of sign-posting in the game. So, yes, they are actively LYING about the state of the game to their community and the public in general and people are swallowing it up hook-line-and-sinker. And the press blindly publishes breathless pieces about all the features of the new update that just came out (there's always a new update) without actually booting up the game to find those features are not anything close to what they hyped up. It's just like the original release, except in perpetuity. What a dumpster fire of a business strategy.

It's obvious to me now that Hello Games would rather sit back and take credit for "fixing" the game after launch, but in my view, most of the features they have supposedly implemented are hampered by bugs and issues accessing the content or just figuring out what to do.

If you're in search of a fun single player space survival-build-craft game, you could make a lot worse choices (assuming, of course, you can put up with the bugs and completely ambiguous un-directed, un-signposted gameplay). Just don't buy it for the multiplayer features or most of the update features -- they are so poorly implemented they may as well not exist.

Note for Sean Murray: Maybe try figuring out how to actually make the game comprehensible by humans before adding more features that don't work?

It's Quake II. The one, the only. Well, to be more specific, it's a nice implementation of another open source engine of Quake II. All the bells and whistles you'd expect from a modern game come packed in, for the most part. Just copy your Quake II content in and you're good to go. I haven't even used the RTX mode cuz this is the best out-of-the-box way to play Quake II on Steam.

1) Download Quake II (and mission packs, if any) and Quake II RTX.
2) Copy content files from Quake II into RTX folder.
3) (Optional) When first loading the game, if you don't have an RTX card, swap the render mode over to `opengl`

Amazing! After all these years, they're still churning out new content for this classic game! Remarkably well maintained and preserved, this game has aged incredibly well. Loading up some of the new content plus some fan/old official content is easy too. All told, there are 100+ levels included in this game, and they are all well worth your time.

Fantastic graphics and performance. Continuous content updates. Fun challenges and remixed maps. I could go on and on. This is some frenzied, super-fast-paced shooting action that lasts nonstop if you want it to. All kinds of fun platforming mechanics like dashing, wall jumping, swinging, grappling off enemies and environment objects all while blasting away while your enemies frantically try and keep pace. Original multiplayer mode concept too! At least for Doom -- that said, I do wish they'd bring back Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch.

Buggy and unpolished. Strange inconsistencies between drills. Doesn't support framerates faster than 60hz. An overall sluggish feel to aiming. Features that flat out don't work. Can't even alt-tab out of the damn thing half the time.

I'm amazed that people are so impressed by this software. I'm sure it gets results, but there's so many other aim training programs these days that seem much more polished and work just as well -- and are free! Don't pay more than a few dollars for this, because that's all it's worth.

P.S.: Don't believe anyone that tells you that only one tool or another is good. All these drills are basically the same from app to app and train similar reflexes and skills. If someone is telling you only one tool trains the 'right' way, they are misrepresenting their knowledge on the topic. Here's the cold hard truth -- no one has any hard data or evidence that one training method or another renders better results. This topic has not been studied seriously, so knowledge is left up to gamer bro-science. Some of it is good, but most of it is overhyped drivel.

The bottom line is this: No one has a monopoly at improving their aim. It simply takes time and practice. That being the case, use the best tool for the job. This ain't it, chief.

While not a full-throated recommendation, Destiny 2 has enough going for it to warrant recommending. Included free now they have all of the base game content plus a good amount of early expansion content -- almost all of it available for co-op play. Plus if you get bored with that, you can queue for any number of PvP or PvE modes.

Content-wise, the game is a bit of a mixed bag. For example, some subclasses can't jump high enough to clear certain missions -- a huge oversight. On top of that, many of the quests tell you to go places and then don't give you waypoints -- leaving you to wander around or ask other players. The UI is a mess of opaque icons and vague descriptions. There's very little to indicate what to do or how to do it, but once you start to 'get it' it DOES get easier. For example, early game, I was restricted from taking on quests because of an opaque error saying "You are already in an activity" or something to that effect. So I had to scramble around and figure out how to get rid of it so I could accept more quests. It wasn't until later that I found that you can only accept one world quest per zone at a time. It's an incredibly weird limitation that isn't explained well. Destiny 2's UI is littered with these kinds of potholes for the player to find and none of this crap is documented well anywhere I can find. Prepare for a frustrating experience out the gate until you decode the UI.

It's embarrassing to be honest -- these are the kinds of things that are supposed to get caught in QA, but Bungie either doesn't care or is incompetent. Figuring out which is which is left as an exercise for the reader. Despite all these shortcomings, Destiny 2 is a chill place to hang with your friends. Just be prepared for some bumps in the road along the way.

Holy cow, this game is feature complete folks.

* Gigantic Open World
* End-to-End Drop-In Online Co-Op
* Hostile Player Invasions with Asymmetrical Multiplayer PvP Matches
* Realistic Graphics
* Immersive Sound
* Haunting Nativist Soundtrack
* Variety of Activities, Quests and Challenges
* Four Different Skill Trees
* Diablo-like loot and Itemization
* Item enhancement, Crafting and Modification systems
* PARKOUR!!!1
* Vicious First Person Melee Combat
* Daily Quests/Challenges
* Competitive Online Leaderboards
* Huge amounts of content
* A crapload of free updates and content
* Vehicles (expansion)

The game isn't perfect.

* At times movement can be glitchy
* UI systems can be obtuse at times
* Awkward mapping of single player game onto co-op features -- for example, the outright-strange requirement that all players be present for quest dialogue from NPCs.

These are pretty minor blemishes on what is otherwise a great game. As I understand it, the the game didn't launch in the best state, but I can tell you that if you, right now, kit yourself out with the expansion and all the free updates that Techland has created for the game then you can't really go wrong -- especially if you're planning on playing with a friend. This game is probably as close you can get to co-op zombie apocalypse nirvana. There's a reason this game is now sporting the coveted "Overwhelmingly Positive" review badge at the top of those reviews.

You already know you want it.

Do it.
