Early Access Review
As someone who bounced hard several times from Path of Exile I was really hoping this game would be more welcoming as the infinite customisation and grimdark atmosphere seem like the perfect combination. I'm so pleased that, despite some finnicky issues I still have with this sequel I am very much enjoying the game. Spells and abilities are beyond satisfying to use, hitting with impact and flair, with combinations feeling particularly satisfying to pull off. The bosses can be tough but, offering a good but not insurmountable challenge.

While character customisation is one of the great strengths of the game it is nevertheless still intimidating, particularly if you don't have a clear idea of how you want to progress your character - there are so many stats to choose from that it can be a mystery as to what piece of armour you should use. As a result the item system feels kind of unintuitive. The vast majority of loot seems to be effectively useless, making boss kills and opening chests somewhat underwhelming

I also really don't like the map - it looks very pretty but there's no real feeling of connectivity. Neighbouring zones can have entrances on the opposite sides of where you'd expect so it feels confusing when you zone in. I find myself relying on quest markers and zone name rather than intuiting location and progression from how the world is built.

Despite these and some performance issues that initially plagued me I am really enjoying the game and while I was initially wanting to wait for the full F2P release - in large part so I could enjoy all the classes and content - I've certainly got my monies worth. Especially since the cheapest version comes with 300 coins/point which you're probably going to want to get anyway to unlock some extra stash tabs.

With influences from Aliens, Starship Troopers, Minecraft and a tons of other cultural waypoints DRG presents a simple gameplay loop of resource gathering in procedurally generated mine system with dynamic hazards mostly in the form of hostile alien life. Delving too greedily and too deep with friends is the ideal way to play as you'll find an exciting, hilarious and challenging experience with 4 very different classes to choose from, all of which have some progression and customisation mechanics to give you something to strive for.

I tend not to buy into Early Access any more having been burned too many times but this is the exception that delivered on all the promises and I look forward to what the future will bring.

While I admit it took me a while to get to grips with the game I've now fallen in love. It can feel a bit daunting having billions of stars at hand and little in the way of guidance, but if you start off slowly, take it one job at a time you'll soon learn the basics and beyond. There are some things that I had to look up (like planetary lands, boarding and disembarking on the surface) but the UI for the most part does a very good job explaining what's going on; so much so that it helps immerse you in the game.

The game is quite sedate (at least so far) so don't jump in expecting epic space battles - no doubt they can be had, but you're much more likely to spend much of your time as a glorified taxi driver or trucker.

I'm really looking forward to what else Frontier has in store.
