genuinely fantastic.
lots of care taken to let you step into V's shoes and get 'into character.' take a swig of your beer before intimidating the bartender into giving up info... stop somewhere scenic and take in the view while you listen to the brief for a prospective job...
combine this with some wonderful writing & compelling quests (especially if you grab that dlc!!) and this game just rocks.
also the actual gameplay and perk trees are fantastically fun to play with post 2.0: i am partial to throwing knives and shotguns.
knives are meant for stealth but by god i make it work anyway. i have yet to receive any complaints, likely on account of neurotoxin making people very quiet
10/10

This game is... fine, I guess. It's a serviceable Beth RPG and absolutely nothing more.
I enjoyed it a lot during my initial playthrough but I've increasingly soured on it in retrospect. It's mechanically... fine. The RPG stuff is there, it's enjoyable. The quests are alright.

What it comes down to is that it's incredibly, mind-numbingly bland. The setting has so little depth or character it's sort of dumbfounding for how much Bethesda is generally expected to shine in that department. In trying to make a space RPG for everyone, they ended up putting out the most boring, cookie-cutter sci-fi setting I've ever played through. It's got a few globs of Space Race paint on it but it really is just that; a few globs. Rarely you'll get glimpses of a much cooler world but it's never followed through on, and the game's biggest issues all sort of follow along that length.

Everything in the game is just incredibly derivative-- nothing stands on its own two legs. Folks got excited when devs spoke about Starfield having DNA from so much hallmark sci-fi media, but it's apparent as the game drags on that there's absolutely nothing\ to the world besides those 'haha, we watched Aliens!' moments. In a story-based game I need to care about what's going on! I need to be invested in the setting and characters!

There are flat out no interesting setpieces or locations in the game, either. Creation Engine 2 can be pretty as hell but it is *never* leveraged. There are no exotic alien landscapes, only mildly different rearrangements of Earthlike biomes... And even within that narrow scope, I still haven't found a true jungle planet, and I've seen One River in One Hundred Hours. One river! Handcrafted dungeons and structures don't fare much better.

I'm rambling a bit, so like, TLDR: buy this if you're looking for a cookie-cutter Bethesda RPG and some mildly fun quests but don't expect anything about this game to stick in your head for more than a week after playing. Fun if you like the format, absolutely nothing else
