Plays like a tabletop campaign.
Spec your characters, go on quests, level up, and get fun loot.
Cast a daylight spell and wreck some undead.
Track down a recipe so you can craft a legendary bow to complement your bracers of archery.
Supplies must be factored in for long travel... until you learn the create food spell.
Battle a young dragon in a random encounter.
Toss a fireball into a crowd of baddies.

I rolled with a fighter/rouge/cleric/wizard team and had a lot of fun.

I dig this game.
A procedurally-generated rougelike shooter with Lovecraft's influence practically oozing through your screen, this one is a real gem.
You might start your adventure carefully peeking around corners, meticulously disarming tripwires, and tiptoeing around the creepy moans of patrolling abominations- your only weapons being a glass bottle [good for one hit] and a bundle of dynamite... and thirty minutes later you find yourself sprinting past monstrosities with your magic boots, rushing to escape before THEY catch you and furiously stabbing or shooting down anything that threatens your health.
This game does horror better than many scripted games. Ominous dread as you enter new worlds with new enemies and hazards... Terror as you round a corner and find an invincible creature bearing down on you... And pure slick fear as you encounter those statues that snap your neck if you take your eyes off of them.
Watch out for those last ones.

Early Access Review
Xenonauts is the best. The guidance and action may be terse, but the strategy and 1980's setting are engaging. Give a recruit a proper callsign after they kill their first invader and later- when the plasma is flying hot and your squad is pinned down behind the burning wreckage of your laser robot tank, when the assault robots and zombie culling reapers draw near, when the electroshock grenades and stun gas rockets have exploded and Major Blast HardCheese only has enough time units and ammunition in his machine gun for one more burst...

You will know what you must do.
