It's like a combination of Hades and Smash.

Meta and run progression is very Hades-like, in the sense that you start by picking a weapon that fundamentally alters your playstyle, and throughout a run you get blessings from these deity-like beings, which like Hades can also include synergies matching two different deities.

The core gameplay, ie. the combat, has very nicely nailed the feel of platform fighters. While I don't play very many of those, this feels close enough to the ones I've played that it feels familiar.

The weapons are fun and varied (I've tried 4 so far), the deities that give you blessings are distinct, each supporting a different playstyle, and the scythe is the coolest damn scythe I've played with in a 2D game. You can toss the blade and knock it around like a ball, altering the scythe's moveset a little while the blade is detached. It's so much fun!

The tools are your disposal all feel like they're useful even if they're not upgraded by a blessing, and there's enough mechanics in here to keep anyone occupied for several hours. Highly recommended. Well done.

Do you like tower defense games? Management games? Were you intimidated by Factorio but want something like it? Then I can only recommend picking this game up. It's super cheap, and it feels a lot like a more simple version of Factorio. It's based on missions which you can end every 10-ish waves, rather than one ongoing playthrough, which gives you a much clearer goal (the lack of which was what kind of scared me away from Factorio). For example, some missions require certain tech, so you check the requirements for said tech, do a mission where you can get the resources for it. The amount of things you need to do to get certain resources can be quite overwhelming as well, but when you start digging into it, everything just starts flowing.

I started a mission with the intent of acquiring large amounts of "Metaglass". To get that I needed to find lead and sand and guide it to a kiln on conveyor belts, but I also needed power for the kiln it so I needed to find coal that I could burn to generate power, then I needed to guide the power to the kiln. But I needed more power to run some of my stronger turrets so I wouldn't eventually get overrun, so I needed to start pumping water and replacing the combustion generator with a steam generator because that also needed coal along with water and generates like 6 times the power, which also allowed me to power MORE kilns.

It feels great and missions can start getting really tough if you run for too long. Going back to old missions with higher tiers of tech to just completely stomp it feels great as well.

That being said, I do have a few issues. For example, the character you play as feels so pathetic and really only exists to build turrets that can do the job, which is probably also the point. There are however some missions where enemies spawn quite rapidly, forcing you to take care of the first couple of waves yourself, and if you don't kite perfectly you'll struggle to survive an encounter with a single basic enemy.

The other one is honestly a tiny issue, but it's worth mentioning because it's annoying. The music just tunes in whenever it feels like it, kinda like Minecraft. But the music in this game is a bit more intense than the quite piano in Minecraft so it doesn't work quite as well.

But honestly, those are minor issues in the grand scheme of how higly I think of this game after having played it for the past couple of days. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet so I can't say anything about it, BUT I am very glad that it's there. It's super cheap as well, 4/5, get ya some Mindustry and lose yourself for the next couple of hours.

Gameplay (both in and out of combat) is basically the same as the first game, you can't really improve on pen and paper-like gameplay.
So much more character customization; multiple races with unique racial abilities, tags for more dialogue options, even origin characters with their own exclusive ability.
Skeletons actually count as undead now, so using regeneration deals damage to them.
The new schools of magic are really great. Polymorph is pretty much what I wanted from a melee caster kinda thing, and summoning is super useful for the extra meat shield.
Leveling schools of magic now gives you passive abilities, instead of just being a requirement for learning more skills.
Physical armor and magical armor being their own health bar is probably my favorite thing, making you resist physical or magical status effects as long as the respective armor type is not lost from an attack that would apply either one.
I'll never be able to play the first game again.

I got no negative opinions about this game at all, its a solid 10/10 in my book. You did it Larian, great job!

Early Access Review
I'm personally a big fan of micro-managing, so this game is right up my alley. If you don't like micro-managing though, there's a mode to play a normal 3v3 where everyone controls one character, just like with another MOBA.

The "customize your characters" part of the game is pretty lackluster. Every class currently has 3 pilots each, and each pilot can pick between a set of skills for their class; 2 different tank pilots can pick between the same active abilities, but a mechanic can't pick the same active abilities as a tank.

Your character can sound like Arnold Schwarznegger.
