Early Access Review
Updating this review again... after 10x the hours in game since my first review. This is *absolutely* one of my top recommendations out of any games I've tried.

This game excels at providing a focused, conflict-free-ish environment that boils down to a moderately complex yet easily approachable set of engineering challenges. It feels tactile and iteration is quick, both great.

- The physics performance is commendable (even as I continue to bug the dev with massive overcomplicated rovers like tank treads and continue to hit performance limits of actual CPU hardware)
- The visual style, UI, and cohesion is a work of art, and the UX (e.g. multiplayer) is quite robust
- Real feedback from the players has definitely influenced and improved the development, I mean heck, I'm already biased because a part I suggested made it in game!

My old review below was only at like 30-40 hours, and it's only gotten better since.
---

For a game so early in development it certainly does not feel like it. There are plenty of challenges to keep your attention and the UI is still simple but very robust. Multiplayer is surprisingly good and plenty of fun to use multiple robots in co-op. Even after completing the primary missions there are still many new and unique jobs.

Brilliant art style and sountrack and works without any issues via proton. Great combination of exploratory and energetic gameplay, and now it's finally released!

Turned my life around. Before I played this game I was a lesser man.

Now I've found the BORIS in my heart. Before I thought the only kind of love was between a man and a woman, but NOW, now I realize that the only TRUE LOVE can be found through the intense, action-filled, space venturing battles of a real SPACE QUEST in the year of the FUTURE!!!!! 2099!!!!

Don't be a lesser man, venture FORWARD!!!! Into your SPACE QUEST!!!!

My first game I did NOT know how to play, the difficulty kept increasing! Is this winnable??? Died before I even understood that money was lost between teleports... lol

Then I played with some friends who knew how the system worked, all of a sudden the game made sense and I could walk around casually at the final timer difficulty, incredible! Being carried by some OP teammates gave me the time to actually read item descriptions and ask questions, far better than any video tutorial.

It's such a break from the stereotypical FPS genre and it's so much more fun. The whole progression isn't "beat each level in order and get better gear" it's "run because every second you waste makes it harder and pile on everything you can grab".

The amount of replayability is also insane, not even having unlocked any new characters, every run was something entirely different and I had to learn new mechanics and strategy every time, forcing me to think fast while always in motion, it keeps the pace of the game enjoyable and leaves no chance to settle into a single play style for the whole run.

A long, dynamic progression over an open, generated world with fun mechanics and a reasonably realistic building system, all bundled together into a great experience with any number of other players with chaos to ensue.

The real experience of this game isn't in the levels, story, or gameplay.

It's all about communicating with some unknown other human through incredibly limited methods.

Without that other traveler the game is linear, simple, and doesn't really have any replay value. Once you get to meeting the others who magically appear to join you then you can really experience what makes Journey a brilliant experience.

Incredibly well designed puzzles where none felt too difficult but still required a lot of thinking and planning to solve.

Overall a great atmospheric art style and fun environments to work around, with a soundtrack not at all distracting yet still makes the game feel much more involved.

While the game *can* be played with just two people, long waits for shuffling lead to some downtime.

I'd recommend adding a "Vote to shuffle" button instead of forcing two players to potentially wait for 3 minutes just to get a usable shuffle when they botched the current stacks. I think it's better to wait on an opponent rather than the arbitrarily-set shuffle timer.

When playing with just two people I think it's more interesting to go for the "full completion" where every card gets into a completed stack. Of course you can still play normally, but you may end up in a slow waiting game when a few wrong cards are placed.

An additional change I'd suggest is to add a countdown timer for the match start so that people playing without audio are not caught off-guard.

Excellent puzzles, however I had to go back to the 1.2 version since 1.3 has some graphical glitches, hopefully those can be fixed then I'll change this review!

Joining the anti-Epic train here because of the lack of Linux support from Epic.

October 2019: On an AMD Vega GPU here and performance has definitely improved, but support still pales in comparison to Windows...

Jan 2020: Never giving any Epic related game or company my money ever again.

July 2020: It's official, they just hate Linux users. Even if you still can buy the game on steam - don't. I'm going to look around for a different game to fill the hole this one will leave.
