UPDATED REVIEW: (See bottom for original)

I started playing again with the newest update and haven't had a single crash to login screen or stash inventory bug yet as I had before, but I'm now frequently encountering bugs where empty backpacks won't fold & items in my backpack mid-raid seem to disappear. The ghost items still take up inventory slots & show up in my stash if I extract even though I can't interact with them (dropping backpack and picking back up fixes sometimes). The hit-reg seems... inconsistent sometimes this go around as well but I might just be bad having been away for so long.

I'm glad to see them making improvements with the update like an increased focus on ship to ship combat, salvaging options to do rat runs and build up your stash, and the new ship buying/upgrading options. I hope they continue in this direction while continuing to iron out bugs and problems. Not sure I care for the addition of 4-person squads though as the LOUD sound of three teammates shuffling around looting is disorienting at times (maybe that's the trade-off for more warm bodies?). Did it once with randoms and I prefer duo/trio still.

I'm also so tired of running Colony Cruiser as a broke solo. Lower that in map rotation a bit please, because I've got zero to hero quests to do and the Merchant ship was already low spawn rate last time I played & quit. I will probably continue to casually fart around with Marauders from time to time, but I can see it slowly retaining more players as it improves. Keep chugging along!

****Old Review Below*****

Wouldn't recommend this as-is just yet. The bones are good, but the random crashes to login screen or desktop, the poor vertical spatial audio, and the bugs with character inventory (causing you to lose everything, lock up, and sometimes crash) keep me from being able to invest much time in it. I've lost more gear to crashes than death.

I keep checking on it periodically, & will update this review in the future if it ever becomes close to what I know it could be.

Though I logged in for a few days when all of my friends were into it, no one lasted more than a week. It just didn't do it for me. *shrug*

Best time I've had in an MMO in a long time. At this point, if you're in a queue you are doing it wrong.

Got on sale for $1.79 and was well worth it. I beat it on normal my first play through in just over four hours. I would have been a bit upset had I paid $30 at release or even $20 on normal price.

Fun game play and as someone who sucks at fighter games, I was stringing together combos feeling like a badass. Reminds me of Hotline:Miami Kung Fu edition or something.

All of that nostalgia is here, but with less weapon choices, and smaller maps/matches. Still a good time!

I wish more people were playing. Game is pretty much dead for the US, as the only servers with ANY players during my game time are the same 2-4 people from south america or Europe in servers where I get 150 ping and can't play due to the lag.

If the game was $5 or so, I think there may be more players more regularly.

So X-Com and Divinity Original Sin 2 had a baby, only this baby came out looking like Fallout!

Great writing on NPC and Character dialogue options has kept me engaged for my playtime thus-far. It's been a long time since I got this into a game. Some of the fights can be tough if you haven't built your team properly, but the challenge doesn't seem un-fair as I've seen in other turn based games.

Interesting mechanics, and atmosphere drive this game while the scavenging really begins to pick up a few hours in when you're debating on spraying bullets, or saving them and taking aimed shots at crucial moments. Do yourself a favor and purchase Polly when you get a chance, tame a 2-headed goat, help an orphan get vengeance for the murder of her parents... then give her cigarettes and a handgun when you recruit her to the Rangers. The world is your oyster!

I have only encountered 2 bugs that were fixed by loading the Autosave file, so I haven't had the same experience as some other people here. Also haven't tried Co-Op yet, so cannot speak to that.

The most randomized fun I've had in a long time with a game. Probably better with friends, but the community has been pretty good and eager to help new players so far.

Though it plays like some mix of Left4Dead & Minecraft (with no building), this game has a personality all its own.

Decent framework, but the cinematics, dialogue, and monsters all get pretty stale quickly. There are a lot of "WIP" places you come across, and the main story has you running back and forth between areas you've already been to (while getting attacked by far weaker TemTem) most of the first area.

Local or global chat doesn't seem to be in yet, but somehow chat is in for trade screens. You have 4 emotes to communicate with outside of that. Strange.

It seems you can trade TemTem, which is kind of cool, but when higher players come to newby land and offer lvl 30 or so basic monsters from the next few zones for 200-500 coins I can't help but wonder how hard money is to find towards the end-game. It seems you only get it when battling NPC trainers, so far of which you can only battle once.

***Review Update 4/1/24***

Chat still doesn't work. When I asked about it on steam forums I was told I violated community guidelines by necroposting.... the post was from 26 days ago and was the most recent on this issue that no one has found a fix for.

The starter area is identical & things still aren't explained well in-game. You pretty much have to Google everything to not wasting TONS of time and effort making poor choices. The grind through the first island wasn't as bad as I remember and it seems like Tems level up faster than they used to which I don't mind.

I'm on the second island working through that part of the story and I hope I find the skates soon to get through the red crystal parts on the 1st and 2nd islands but I'm not sure I want to or even care... There seems to be a lot of time spent walking back and forth across maps to get a quest, talk to someone, then turn it in. Most of this dialogue can be skipped, but there are some dialogue options that lock you out of rewards without having any sort of prompt letting you know this... most of the ones I've found "seem" like the right or a plausible response to someone talking but the NPC will just refuse to talk to you after that point. I remember this being in EA as well so I can only assume it is intended to make players pay attention to bland dialogue?

It's "done" as much as it will ever be, but what is there is a solid single player experience. I have yet to find anything that even requires I interact with another person, so the choice to make it multiplayer, without chat is a weird one.

There's a lot of other monster collector type games coming out this year too which is likely why they've chosen to stop new development on this live service game. A dev in steam forums did say that when they have to eventually take the servers offline they're should be an offline singleplayer version available.
