(SPOILER-FREE, ONLY CHAPTER ONE COVERED)
"I'd been shot more times than I could remember, but this felt different. Maybe fate was sending me a message. Trying to tell me my luck was finally about to run out."

Before we begin, I'd like to note that I will not be writing anything about the multiplayer developed for the game, as I never got to try it due to the empty servers.

In 2012, Rockstar Games took on the role of continuing Remedy Entertainment's Max Payne with the third installment in the series, taking place in São Paulo, Brazil, nine years after the events of the previous game. Starting with our protagonist, The "Great American Hero": Max Payne with his new partner in crime Raul Passos who had convinced him to start working a private security gig for Rodrigo Branco, a wealthy businessman just trying to uphold his father's legacy and his family whom had not tasted the despairs of struggle. His two brothers, Victor Branco, a right-wing politician, and the youngest brother living a carefree life that of a frat boy, Marcelo Branco, and finally, Rodrigo's wife, Fabiana Branco.

A new start for our beaten down hero Max Payne still trying to face the struggles from what he had experienced before, two dead lovers and a crippling alcohol addiction to try and ease up all the pain that was inflicted on him. Something was gnawing at him; all the gunfights and losses left him with a mental hemorrhage that no amount of painkillers could nullify, no matter how hard he tried.
The cycle of ugliness starts again when a high-class celebration takes place atop a tower where they can look down upon the unfortunate, whom had taken the party hostage as gangsters hold up Fabiana and Rodrigo while Max is deep into his drinking and Passos doing the bare minimum. The gunshots were enough of a wake-up call to sober up Max as he grabbed his pistol with Passos alongside him for a short while before they split up to search more efficiently. Max begins to spit out his iconic one-liners and quotes, which have been a staple since the first game. a lot of them characterize him well; some lines are just trying way too hard to be cool or tiring, but most hit the spot well. You could say the same for his aim as the game finally throws you into his shoes when you encounter a handful of thugs, and you start knocking over the dominoes by shooting them. But with corpses instead of dominoes.

Upon shooting for the first few times, you can immediately pick up on the immaculate gunplay and how smoothly everything responds in the world, packed with detail and a lively feeling instead of empty corridors from one to another. It is a given that the gameplay cycle is repetitive but doesn't drag on due to the game's length but it doesn't quite make the effort to change up the style as the most you're offered is just different guns and ways to approach fights with them, long to short distance and aggressive or tactical but that is about it. There are segments during every level where you are on a moving platform or given a special weapon, but it feels like that it could've been expanded on more, but that is the formula of Max Payne, which hasn't strayed from the first game, which still doesn't shy it from critique. Nothing still beats the feeling of picking up two pistols and diving into fights in slow-motion in a way that defines shooters from the first installment in the series.

The art and visuals are also not beautiful in the slightest, not in the way you would expect it to be, anyways. It is ugly, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and rotten. In a beautiful way, the way it's designed to make you feel despaired and dangling to a slight bit of hope paired with the gritty music that makes it sound like you are marching towards your death with production help from the band HEALTH that provided a lot of the game's amazing music and the signature song TEARS. All are composed in a way that compliments the constant gunfire and death.

The story is a spiral (Not in terms of writing, of course) after the first chapter upon recovering Rodrigo and Fabiana, and it is grim in a way that is moving- full of death and misery with messages of hope and dark comedy telling the story of a man battling himself and forces in an unfamiliar place, without the ability to differ one thing from another anymore yet taking on government corruption and somehow making things worse for everyone and himself. Yet showing that no matter how much someone ♥♥♥♥♥ up and endures, there is still a way out. It is incredibly portrayed, although a lot, especially diehard fans might argue that it doesn't serve justice to Max's character from the man he was in the previous two games.

Another note is that it does justice in displaying the state of things in a foreign place such as South America and such but still comes off wrong in some aspects that definitely do get a bit stereotypical that a lot of people might not pick up on, but might be unpleasant or hilarious to people who are familiar with the setting.

With nothing more I can say, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of third-person shooters, grim neo-noir settings, and detective stories. It is pieced together perfectly and such a blast even if you just care about shooting stuff like a brainless moron. A 5-star and a 10 out of 10 experience.

"And now, your local forecast. Boy, it's dark in some places but it's sunny everywhere else."
